Australian Open Men’s Singles QF
The early dismissal of world no.1 Andy Murray and no. 2 Novak Djokovic has caused drastic changes on betting odds and betting websites. It has also blown the Australian Open title chase wide open with the likes of Stan Wawrinka, Milos Raonic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal all looking to win 2017’s first Grand Slam.
Sure enough, with no clear online betting favourite yet, the last eight men standing in Melbourne will be up for an intense quarterfinal action.
Stan Wawrinka vs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
As the highest ranked player in the top half of the draw with Murray no longer an obstacle, Wawrinka is expected to emulate his 2014 championship run in Australia. The hardworking Swiss is obviously physically ready for the tournament, and after surviving a five-set marathon and four-set game in the early rounds, he is more than capable of beating an Asian Handicap -1.50 @ 2.25.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and his bulldozing forehand will pose some challenge, but the fact that he hasn’t defeated Wawrinka since 2013 isn’t encouraging.
Mischa Zverev vs Roger Federer
Tipped as the underdog with odds of 5.54, Zverev will take the hard court and prove that his victory over Murray was no fluke. His serve-and-volley game evokes the tennis of the old, and he will certainly combine it with his aggressiveness to disrupt Federer’s baseline game.
However, the 17-time Grand Slam Champion is the favourite for a reason. The all-court, all-around player is on top of his game, and his strong service and net plays are just perfect for countering Zverev’s style.
David Goffin vs Grigor Dimitrov
Both players had a fantastic run up to this point, but world no. 15 Dimitrov will enter this match with more confidence as he remains unbeaten in nine games. The 2017 Brisbane International titlist has been on fire in the Land Down Under, and he will be a dangerous opponent for Goffin with his fluid style and terrific shot-making.
However, if Goffin—who became the first Belgian man to reach the event’s quarter-finals—can maintain the counter-punching brilliance he displayed against Dominic Thiem, he could very well pull an upset.
Milos Raonic vs Rafael Nadal
Most fans might be dreaming of a Nadal–Federer finale now that the top seeds are out. Nevertheless, Nadal’s chances aren’t that high with the hard-hitting Canadian juggernaut waiting for him on the other side of the court.
Although it’s difficult to count Nadal out with their 6-2 head-to-head record, Raonic still has the advantage considering that he ousted the Spaniard in Brisbane early this January. Not to mention that he did it in straight sets with 23 service aces compared to Nadal’s four.
