The Big 4 and More to Watch Out For in Wimbledon

ATP – Wimbledon

There are certainly dark horses in the tournament that can provide some live betting drama, but it would be a surprise for online betting if anyone outside the so-called tennis ‘Big Four’ of Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal won the title.

After all, only these four men won the Wimbledon crown over the last 14 years.

Sure enough, few sports betting fans will back Murray and Djokovic considering their poor form this 2017. However, if there’s a perfect time for the two to revive their season, it’s here at the All England Club where they are seeded first and second respectively.

Murray, at odds of 2.50, indeed appeared out of sorts in his recent opening match defeat at Queen’s Club. His hip injury, which has been bothering him for some time now, is also a cause for concern as it might jeopardise his run in the tournament.

Nonetheless, it shouldn’t be forgotten what the World No. 1 can do in Wimbledon. It’s been over a decade since the Scot missed the quarter-final of the competition, and he should be motivated to defend his title in front of the home fans.

Djokovic – despite leading the odds at 2.00 – is in the same situation as Murray; but after dropping into the rankings to just No. 4, the Serb will undoubtedly aim to recoup some points and prove that he is not yet a spent force as many make him be.

While the two top seeds will step on the grass court looking for resurgence, all eyes will be on Federer and Nadal who have been the standout players of the first half of the tennis season.

Federer (2.50) is having the best tennis of his career in years, having won the Australian Open and the Sunshine double earlier this 2017. And although he passed on the clay-court battles, he proved in the Halle Open last week that he’s still feeling better than ever.

Nadal (3.00), meanwhile, further solidified his title as ‘King of Clay’ with wins in Barcelona, Madrid, Monte Carlo and Roland Garros.

The Spaniard last triumphed in Wimbledon in 2010, but his dominant form gives him the best chance to hoist the holy grail of tennis come mid-July.

As usual, highly-ranked players like Stan Wawrinka (8.00), Dominic Thiem (9.00) and Milos Raonic (11.00) will be difficult opponents. There are also young power players like Nick Kyrgios (12.00) and Lucas Pouille (151.00) who like grass and are capable of going deep.

Two-time Wimbledon semi-finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (51.00) and Marin Cilic (15.00) – who has been to the quarterfinals in the last three years – are also dark horses worth watching. The same goes for Italian Open titlist Alexander Zverev (13.00) and reigning Queen’s champion Feliciano Lopez (21.00).

It will be another two weeks of exciting tennis, and although the favourites are expected to have a smashing time, plenty of colourful and inventive plays should make it a fun watch.
