The Premier League draws the best players from around the world but that hasn’t always been the case, and four of the top five all time scorers are English. France striker Thierry Henry has recently been shunted down to sixth by Argentina’s Sergio Aguero who took his place.
But again, in places six to ten Henry stands alone, with the numbers made up by Robbie Fowler, Jermain Defoe, Michael Owen and Les Ferdinand. And the fifth highest Premier League scorer is a Chelsea and England legend.
5. Frank Lampard (177 goals)
For a midfield player to get on this list is testament to the outstanding all-round game of Chelsea’s current head coach. Only Paul Scholes at Manchester United could rival Lampard’s box to box play and ability to get on to the final ball before firing a rocket goal-wards.
Lamps kept the excellent Scholes out of the England side at times, with Steven Gerrard also featuring heavily, and he won 106 caps scoring 29 goals for his country. Well 30 actually…but his ‘goal’ against Germany in the 2010 World Cup, which hit the bar and bounced a couple of feet over the line, was before the days of VAR!
Now he’s in the Premier League 2020 news as the Blues manager as he hopes to guide them to Champions League football in his first season in charge.
4. Sergio Aguero (180 goals)
Currently the most prolific striker in the Premier League, Aguero has passed Lampard’s tally in his eighth season at Manchester City. His move from Independiente to Atletico Madrid in 2006 introduced him to European football fans, and it is at the Etihad where he has become a world superstar.
In January he scored the 12th Premier League hat-trick of his career in a 1-6 win away to Aston Villa and that knocked Henry out of the top five as he passed the Frenchman’s 175.
He’s in contention for the Golden Boot this season, currently on 16 goals. The Premier League 2020 betting odds have him alongside Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as favourite. That’s some achievement in a season in which the Sky Blues aren’t really competing and SBOBET Premier League fans know they can rely on Sergio!
His goals have helped Manchester City to pick up the only piece of silverware this season, winning the EFL Cup yet again.
3. Andrew Cole (187 goals)
Not known for his sense of humour, Manchester United’s Andrew Cole was as focussed a finisher as you’d ever want to see. He struck up an awkward partnership with Teddy Sheringham but never really got on with his strike partner. Manchester United fans didn’t mind that much as the former Newcastle hit-man helped to fire the Red Devils to treble glory in 1999, seemingly happier alongside Dwight Yorke as the pair scored 53 goals between them in that epic season.
2. Wayne Rooney (208 goals)
At the age 18, Wayne Rooney’s £25m move from Everton to Manchester United in 2004 was the signing of the decade. He went on to win 16 trophies in 13 incredible years at Old Trafford, before returning to Everton. He still plies his trade at Championship club Derby County
His overhead kick against Manchester City in 2011 was judged to be the best Premier League goal in its first 20 seasons, and his 208 league goals make him the second top scorer of all time, while making the third highest number of assists at 103. He’s also England’s top scorer of all time with 53 goals.
1. Alan Shearer (260 goals)
Newcastle born Shearer was as lethal a player as we’ve ever seen in the Premier League, strong and fast and with the ability to score any type of goal. He could hit 30 yard pile-drivers, powerful headers and poachers’ goals in the six yard box. He hit the headlines at Southampton before heading north, but not to a big club.
Manchester United fans sing a song about Shearer, deriding his decision, in 1992, to follow the money at Blackburn Rovers rather than heading to Old Trafford in search of silverware. Rovers did of course win the Premier League in 1995 as Shearer plundered 34 goals, but that simply prompted the bigger clubs to spend more. In 1996 he went back to his spiritual home in Newcastle, a season after Cole had headed to Old Trafford, and he played the last ten years of his career there, scoring 148 goals in all competitions at a ratio of almost 1:2.
