The Premier League once again provided some terrific matches during the 2019-2020 season. There were matches which saw history both made and foiled, not to mention some stunning upsets and amazing comebacks that will live long in the memories of SBOBET Premier League supporters.
So as the wait for the Premier League to return continues, let’s take a quick look back at five of the best matches of the season to date.
Southampton 0-9 Leicester City
Leicester City had a brilliant start to their debut campaign under manager Brendan Rodgers. The Foxes lost just twice in their first 17 matches, and at one point won eight matches in a row. The second of those eight wins was their historic 9-0 demolition of Southampton at St. Mary’s.
The Foxes went ahead after just 10 minutes through Ben Chilwell. And two minutes later, the Saints went down to 10 men after Ryan Bertrand was shown a red card. It was all one-way traffic after that as Leicester added four more goals before half-time.
But even with the win secured, Leicester continued their assault on the poor Saints as they looked to break the record for the biggest Premier League away win of all-time. They eventually got it through a stoppage-time penalty from Jamie Vardy, who also completed his hat-trick.
Arsenal 3-2 Aston Villa
Arsenal have had a disastrous Premier League campaign. Unai Emery was unable to fix the squad’s many weaknesses, which led to them sliding way down in the table.
Emery was eventually sacked midway through the season, but before the Spaniard’s dismissal, he led the Gunners to one of the most dramatic wins of the year against Aston Villa.
Arsenal were in serious trouble as they were a goal down and a man down at half-time following Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ sending off. And even when they equalised through a Nicolas Pepe penalty, Wesley scored seconds later to put Villa back in front.
But Calum Chambers and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came through with late strikes in quick succession to complete the 10-man Gunners’ amazing comeback victory.
Sheffield United 3-3 Manchester United
Sheffield United and Manchester United are two of the top four defences in the league this season, conceding just 25 and 30 goals, respectively. But surprisingly, the two Uniteds combined to produce several Premier League 2020 highlights in a thrilling 3-3 shootout when they met at Bramall Lane.
The Blades looked set for another huge victory as they went up 2-0 against the visitors. But the Red Devils — inspired by teens Brandon Williams and Mason Greenwood — rallied in remarkable fashion as they scored three times in a seven-minute span to turn the game on its head.
But the brilliant match had one more twist left as Oli McBurnie snatched a dramatic equaliser in the 90th minute to rescue a point for the Blades.
Watford 3-0 Liverpool
If and when Premier League play resumes, Liverpool will win their first league title in three decades. The Merseysiders were absolutely dominant this season as they built up an insurmountable 25-point lead over closest challengers, Manchester City.
However, the Reds are out of the running for another piece of history — an invincible season — after Watford defied the Premier League 2020 betting odds and produced by far the biggest upset of the season.
The relegation-threatened Hornets had been in disastrous form heading into that match with the champions-elect, but they got themselves up for the challenge.
Ismaila Sarr, in particular, showed the quality that made him the club’s record signing as he terrorised Liverpool’s vaunted defence all game long.
The Senegalese star bagged a brace and set up Troy Deeney’s clinching goal as the Hornets claimed a historic 3-0 victory at Vicarage Road to end Liverpool’s bid for an unbeaten season.
Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-2 Manchester City
Wolves have been a thorn in Manchester City’s side in recent years. Nuno Espiritu Santo’s side handed the defending champions their first home loss of the season as a late Adama Traore brace sparked a 2-0 victory at the Etihad.
The hosts were handed a golden opportunity to claim another great result against the reigning champions as Ederson was sent off after just 12 minutes. But despite going a man down, City somehow went 2-0 up thanks to a Raheem Sterling brace.
City’s Wolves woes would come back to bite them, though, as the home side staged a stunning comeback. After Adama Traore pulled a goal back, Raul Jimenez scored eight minutes from time to level it up at 2-2.
And just before the 90 minute mark, Matt Doherty made Molineux erupt with a brilliant strike to hand Wolves one of the most famous wins in their history.
