Inter Milan 3-1 Torino
Inter Milan earned a huge confidence boost for their ongoing campaign as they turned in one of their most dominant displays as of late.
The Nerazzurri notched a 3-1 victory against Torino in their quick stopover at the San Siro Stadium, which effectively put them back in the second spot of the Serie A standings.
Inter got off to a bad start when Samir Handanovic practically gifted Torino’s Andrea Belotti the first goal of the evening.
However, Ashley Young and Diego Godin scored shortly after the halftime break and one more goal from Lautaro Martinez sealed the deal.
Antonio Conte’s men are now back in the mix with 68 points and level with Lazio. And although their Serie A 2020 odds for the championship are slim, getting back to where they once were is a good consolation in itself.
“Victories are important to raise morale and create a sense of certainty, especially for the players,” said Antonio Conte during the post-game interview.
“When we don’t get the win, it’s really frustrating, especially because recently we’ve faced punishments that’s out of proportion with the mistakes that we make. But we’re on the right path,” he added.
As for Il Toro, they are now placed 16th in the table and remained five points above the dreaded relegation zone. Moreno Longo’s men are in a precarious position and they have to dig deeper in order to survive.
As always, here is last night’s package of Serie A 2020 highlights brought to you by SBOBET.
Highlights of the game
After the match’s first few minutes, it looked like Inter Milan were about to go back to their inconsistent ways because of such a costly mistake from one of their more reliable players.
Simone Verdi curled in a cross via a corner kick in the 17th minute and Samir Handanovic grabbed the ball successfully in the air. However, he dropped the ball and Andrea Belotti kicked it in for the first goal of the night.
So when it was Cristian Ansaldi’s turn to cross the ball a few minutes later, Samir Handanovic made sure to parry the ball away in order to avoid repeating the same mistake.
Ansaldi would threaten Inter once more when Andrea Belotti spearheaded a counter-attack midway in the first half. The forward would strike a low shot, but Handanovic didn’t drop the ball this time after a save.
Inter would draw level three minutes after the halftime break, as Ashley Young recovered a Lautaro Martinez header and belted one in to equalise for the home team.
In the 51st minute, this time, Ashley Young carved out an opportunity for his teammates with a beautiful volley – followed by a brilliant one-two header play to which Alexis Sanchez provided an assist to Diego Godin’s goal.
Lautaro Martinez would score his 18th goal of the season 10 minutes later when his long range strike bounced off the foot of Gleison Bremer and the ball found its way past Salvatore Sirigu for their third goal of the evening.
Andrea Belotti would have one more crack at a goal when he was on the receiving end of a cross, but his header just deflected off the cross bar, unfortunately.
Alexis Sanchez, Robert Gagliardini, and Antonio Candreva also had their scoring opportunities, but Salvatore Sirigu prevented them from adding Inter’s growing tally.
Key statistics
Inter Milan simply had it going all night in terms of their attack as they’ve mustered 21 total shots along with 11 on target, compared to only eight and two respectively for Torino. They’ve also controlled 62-per cent of the possession.
However, bookings were plenty in this match as eight yellow cards were given away for these two teams. The home team got five while the visitors had three.
As manager for the Nerazzurri, Antonio Conte’s pristine record remains intact. He has won all six matches against Torino as their boss and there are only three bosses in the three-point era who have a better record than him against any opposing club.
What’s next?
Inter Milan will have a two-game road trip facing S.P.A.L. and AS Roma before hosting Fiorentina on July 23rd.
Torino, on the other hand, will have a crucial match against Genoa on Friday before facing Fiorentina and Hellas Verona in their next two fixtures.
