Serie A: The Scudetto is Heading to Milan…but which Club?

The 2021/22 Serie A is coming to its conclusion and it promises to be one of the most exciting in recent years, particularly for fans of the two Milan clubs.

After almost a decade of Juventus dominance, Antonio Conte led Inter to the 2021 Scudetto and his successor, Simone Inzaghi, is in the hunt for the same prize in his first season as Nerazzurri boss. The Old Lady is forced to sit by and watch while the Milan clubs battle it out, and they have being going stride for stride over the last six games with four wins and two draws each, though Inzaghi’s side has won the last four; and they also dealt a psychological blow to Milan with a 3-0 win in the Coppa Italia last week.

Right at the start of the campaign I Rossoneri’s Serie A 2022 results were spectacular, as the charged into a lead alongside Napoli winning 11 of the first 12 games, but now they are clinging on to the top of the table, two points ahead with four games left, but Inter have a crucial game in hand.

Last weekend Milan’s trip to Rome turned out to be a nail-biter as Lazio took a lead and dominated for much of the first half before I Rossoneri launched a stunning comeback. Meanwhile Roma boss Jose Mourinho faced his old side and I Nerrazzuri got the better of his latest team, with a 3-1 victory to lead the way in the latest Serie A 2022 betting odds and they have a chance to go top when they visit Bologna on Wednesday night. It was an emphatic win for I Nerazzurri over Roma as goals from Denzel Dumfries, Marcelo Brozovic and the red hot striker Lautaro Martinez gave them an unassailable lead before Henrikh Mkhitaryan gave Mourinho’s men a late consolation.

Inter’s Wednesday night fixture away to Bologna is a chance to take top spot, but they travel without the injured trio of Arturo Vidal, Robin Gosens and Felipe Caicedo, and their 13th placed hosts are unbeaten in four. Should Inter win and go top by a point they arguably have the easier run-in, with Udinese, Cagliari, Empoli and Sampdoria to play; while AC Milan host Europa chasing Fiorentina and Atalanta, as well as facing away games to Verona and Sassuolo.

Tonali keeps Milan in the hunt

Milan picked up an impressive and vital three points away to Lazio but they toiled for much of the game and trailed from the fourth minute when Capocannoniere leader Ciro Immobile fired Lazio in front with his 26th goal of the campaign. Veteran striker Olivier Giroud hauled Milan back five minutes after the break and that changed the complexion of the game as Pioli threw on Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ante Rebic in search of a winner. And the big Swede set up the deciding goal when he headed down for Sandro Tonali to poke the ball home on 92 minutes.

AC Milan’s Olivier Giroud celebrates scoring their first goal against Lazio

The 21 year old midfielder was booked for his over zealous goal celebration as he ripped his shirt off, but who can blame him as he scored the goal which kept Milan top of the league and left Lazio in seventh and a place behind the Europa League qualification places. He’s a lifelong Milan fan and Tonali said he felt like he’d scored at the San Siro as the Milan fans celebrated with him: “Feeling most of the Stadium was Rossonero was just crazy,” he said. “We thank them for coming, it was like playing at the San Siro and we showed that in the second half. It was a wonderful feeling, one that brought us the result we worked so hard for after a bad start.

“Scoring any goal for Milan is an unforgettable feeling, let alone one like this.”

There are twists and turns to come in this nail-biting race and here at SBOTOPwe’ll be there every step of the way, until we know which Milan giant has its hands on the 2022 Scudetto.

Women going professional

In the women’s game Juventus are on the brink of a fifth successive league triumph as they go into their final two points five points ahead of second placed Roma.

And there was more exciting news in the sport this week as Italy’s football federation (FIGC) confirmed the Italian women’s Serie A will become a professional league from the start of the 2022/23 campaign. It’s been a while coming as FIGC took control of the women’s top division during the 2018/19 campaign and it was always the intention to professionalise the game as soon as practicable.

FIGC president Gabriele Gravina said: “This is an important day. Finally there are rules governing the activity and practice of professionalism in women’s football.”

And it gives the Italian women’s team, ranked 14th in the world, a timely boost as they prepare for the Women’s Euro 2022 tournament.
