Serie A: Roma and Inter Will Bring the Fireworks at Stadio Olimpico

AS Roma vs Inter Milan

The Serie A clash between AS Roma and Inter Milan is easily the most intriguing matchup to look forward to in the eighth matchday of the 2024-25 campaign.

Inter Milan aim to reclaim the top spot after they were usurped by a resurgent Napoli team. Simone Inzaghi’s side has 14 points, and they can do it with an away win on Sunday, especially if Napoli lose to Empoli tomorrow.

On the other hand, AS Roma will look to get back into the European football picture. Ivan Juric’s men are currently ninth with 10 points, level with the eighth-seeded Atalanta, 10th-seeded Empoli, and 11th-seeded Fiorentina.

The circumstances may be different for AS Roma and Inter Milan, but SBOTOP football fans are guaranteed to get their dose of Serie A 2024 highlights at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.

Talking Points

Dovbyk finding rhythm with AS Roma

After a slow start with his new team, Artem Dovbyk is back to firing goals since he has done so in three of their last four league matches. He has also scored for the Giallorossi during their 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao in the opening matchday of this year’s revamped Europa League.

With three league goals, Dovbyk is on top of AS Roma’s scoring charts. Right behind him are Bryan Cristante, Tommaso Baldanzi, Paulo Dybala, Nicolo Pisilli, and Eldor Shomurodov, who all have one each.

Artem Dovbyk is expected to lead the frontline again on Sunday after an injury scare during the international break. According to reports, Dovbyk’s knee flared up recently, but the Ukrainian international is back to 100-per cent fitness in his Rome return.

AS Roma are under pressure amid  fan protests to improve their league results after they recently sacked club icon Daniele De Rossi and appointed Ivan Juric as his replacement.

Juric started off well with back-to-back league victories against Udinese (3-0) and Venezia (2-1), but they dropped points against IF Elfsborg (1-0) in the Europa League and Monza (1-1) recently.

Inter Milan will almost have a full squad available

Serie A defending champions Inter Milan hope to catch up with Napoli in the title race with a win against AS Roma
Marcus Thuram celebrates with his teammates after scoring Inter Milan’s second goal against Torino

Simone Inzaghi had time to reset during the international break, and the good news for Inter Milan is that they have everyone back in the fold ahead of Sunday, except for Piotr Zielinski (thigh).

Nicolo Barella will return to the starting XI this weekend, which is always great news for Inter Milan. Inzaghi will also bring back the strike partnership of Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez after rotating with Marko Arnautovic and Mehdi Taremi due to their hectic run of matches.

Marcus Thuram is the man in form for the Nerazzurri. He leads the team with seven league goals in the first seven league matches, joining only Christian Vieri (2001 and 2002) and Lautaro Martinez (2023) as the only players that have managed this feat for Inter Milan this century.

Since the start of last season, the former Borussia Monchengladbach star has 28 goal involvements (20 goals and eight assists), putting him behind only Kylian Mbappe (40) among all French players in Europe’s top five leagues.

History

History beckons Inter Milan on Sunday, as they could become the first team to score 300 goals against a single opponent in the Italian top-flight since the Nerazzurri have already scored 298 goals in this fixture.

Since 2021, Inter Milan have won six of their eight Serie A matches against AS Roma (D1, L1), including three consecutive victories at the Stadio Olimpico.

However, AS Roma haven’t conceded more than one goal in their last five league games (three goals total). The Giallorossi have also scored in each of their last 24 Serie A matches at home.

Paulo Dybala (124) is close to joining Gonzalo Higuain (125) in third place among the top Argentinian scorers in Serie A. The only people about them are Hernan Crespo (153) and Gabriel Batistuta (184).

Betting Tip

The Serie A 2024 odds have the visitors winning this contest. Inter Milan are pegged at 1.83 to win, whereas AS Roma are at 3.75, and a draw is at 3.45 in the 1X2 market.

Inter Milan will likely outscore AS Roma, but the Giallorossi should be able to score at least once in this game, making alternatives like Total Goal 2-3 at 2.02, Over 2.50 at 1.76, Over 2.75 at 1.99, Over 3.00 at 2.26, or even Total Goal 4-6 at 2.98 viable. However, if you fancy the chances of this game being a low-scoring affair, going for Total Goal 0-1 is the top bet because of its 3.56 offer.
