Serie A: La Vecchia Signora Are Pleading for a Goal

Genoa vs Juventus

Juventus have started their Serie A campaign with blistering 3-0 wins over Como and Hellas Verona. Both results gave I Bianconeri fans much to cheer for, with heaps of praise shown towards new boss Thiago Motta.

But since then, the Old Lady seemed to have developed forgetfulness in scoring, failing to find the back of the net in all three of their last Serie A 2024 results.

In between, they dispose of PSV in the Champions League (3-1) after goals from Kenan Yildiz, Weston McKennie and Nicolas Gonzalez, giving their fans something to cheer for.

Their upcoming opponents, meanwhile, are fresh off a derby loss from neighbours Sampdoria in the Coppa Italia.

Genoa were the ones who opened the scoring nine minutes in, after Milan Badelj intercepted a poor pass from Sampdoria’s backline that ended in an Andrea Pinamonti goal.

A late equaliser from Fabio Borini ensured that penalties would be played, to which La Samp turned out victorious. However, their win was overshadowed by the riot that happened prior to the start of the match; an incident that had multiple people injured and arrested.

Hence, it is still unsure whether or not Genoa’s upcoming tussle with Juventus will be held with fans or not.

Talking Points

Il Grifone’s poor form is concerning

After holding the defending champions Inter to a 2-2 draw, Genoa edged out Monza away from home to start their campaign relatively well.

However, their moment of delight would soon falter after a string of bad results, barring their last-gasp draw against Roma.

Three losses out of their last four contests—two of which came against newly-promoted clubs—and now facing an uphill battle against Juventus, things aren’t looking so good in the Rossoblu side of the Luigi Ferraris Stadium.

Add to this the horrific incident against their bitter rivals yesterday, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.

If Juventus will find their shooting touch and unload on them come Sunday, Genoa could very well find themselves in the relegation zone.

Clean sheets aren’t enough for Juve

Despite going 0-0 for three straight league matches, Juventus can take some positives out of this unfortunate rut they are in.

First, they are now the only team that have yet to concede a single goal in Europe’s top five leagues. Second, a win or a draw against Genoa will have them going unbeaten for six Serie A matches in a row, in what would be the longest streak in the club’s history.

However, these statistics take a back seat to the fact that Juventus badly need a resounding win.

They have the quality and the personnel, and they did show their scoring prowess against PSV in the Champions League.

Still, the defensive acumen of Italian teams—difficult to break more often than not—has recently been a thorn to Juventus’ side.

Dusan Vlahovic and his fellow Bianconeri have only scored six goals in five games, with the former only netting twice in the season so far.

Sure, the squad were fatigued in their draw against Napoli, with the match coming so soon after their UCL tie.

But if they’ll once again be held in goalless stalemate, then some questions will need to be answered immediately.

History

It has been a happy hunting ground for Juventus every time they meet Genoa, with the Old Lady being the club to whom Genoa have lost the most in Serie A (67W-23D-22L).

At the same time, Juventus are also the team that have scored the most against Il Grifone, netting 226 times overall.

Genoa, however, did well for themselves in this match-up last season, walking away with points in both fixtures (1-1 and 0-0).

Betting Tip

Despite their struggles in front of goal, Juventus are the obvious favourites going into this one (1.74), whilst an unlikely Genoa win goes for 4.58. Meanwhile, a draw is priced at 3.24.

Personally, I think this will finally be the match where Juventus break their poor scoring form in the league; they will beat an out-of-form Genoa side quite easily.

For an alternative bet, correctly guessing a 1-0 result in favour of Juventus is priced at 5.10 in the SBOTOP Serie A 2024 betting odds.

And with this result being the most frequent outcome between these two clubs—a total of 12 meetings having this scoreline—putting money on this result may just put some extra cash in your pockets.
