Serie A: Verona Can Expect a Warm Reception in Rome

AS Roma vs Hellas Verona

Rome is a great city to visit at any time, but when the Gentlemen of Verona arrive in Italy’s capital they won’t have much time for sight-seeing!

And it’s going to be pretty hot for Ivan Juric’s underdogs, with temperatures close to 30 degrees and their big-hitting hosts having just achieved back-to-back wins.

Serie A: Roma vs Verona, at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday night, is a clash between two sides which have been chasing European places this season; you’d expect that of Roma, but Hellas have exceeded expectations in their first campaign back in the top flight.

The visitors will be happy with a top-half finish and I suspect they’d take a draw in this game. But this looks like it has a home win written all over it according to the latest Roma vs Verona betting odds. Though only four places separate the two sides with Paulo Fonseca’s side in fifth and Hellas in ninth, the hosts are ten points ahead and that lead is stretching.

Talking Points

Roma hitting form

Paulo Fonseca’s side have been on a sticky run but they have followed three defeats with back to back wins. I Giallorossi have a wealth of attacking talent to call on, and former Manchester United midfielder has been at his creative best, his pace and trickery carving out openings for Roma and he scored in I Giallorossi’s recent 2-1 victory over Parma.

Edin Dzeko is still a top ten striker in the Serie A listings, and Roma’s main man up front with 14 league goals to his name this season, while 21-year-old striker Nicolo Zaniolo was on target in a 0-3 win away to Brescia last week.

Roma are 11 points behind fourth-placed Inter Milan, and Fonseca’s side is in a three-way battle for two guaranteed Europa League places (and a favourably draw), along with two in-form sides. Napoli are two points behind in fifth and AC Milan a further two points back, but both of Roma’s rivals have won four from the last six and so I Giallorossi needs a win against Hellas to stay in control.

Verona labouring for points

Promoted last season through the playoffs, having finished fifth in Serie B, Ivan Juric has guided his team to an impressive first campaign back in the top flight.

But following the suspension of play due to the COVID 19 outbreak, Hellas have returned to action with a mixed bag of results, and I Mastini have prospered more on home soil than on their travels.

One win in six has all but ended Verona’s hopes of a Europa League place but they have proved difficult to beat. Captain Miguel Veloso showed a cool head to fire home a late equaliser in an impressive 2-2 draw with Inter Milan, and only a 96th-minute equaliser from Cutrone denied Verona a win away to Fiorentina last week.

History

I Mastini have been around for over a century, founded in 1903 by a group of students from Greece, and they have spent plenty of time in the top flight of Italian football.

Verona’s golden period was between 1970 and 1990 when they stayed in Serie A almost without interruption, and they stunned the hierarchy by winning the Scudetto in 1985.

I Giallorossi are three-time winners of Serie A; the last in 2001 and previously in 1983, two years before Verona’s triumph but, in terms of resource, there is a huge gulf between the two teams.

The head to head Roma vs Verona results have been pretty much one-sided in recent years with Roma winning the last three meetings, including a 1-3 victory in Verona in December thanks to goals from Diego Perotti, Mkhitaryan and Justin Kluivert.

Betting Tip

??
AS Roma vs Hellas Verona Half Time Full Time – Home Home @ 2.18
July 16, 03:35 (GMT+8)

Paulo Fonseca’s team are hot favourites for this game with Roma at 1.60 here at SBOBET to win and the draw at 3.60, while Hellas is out there at odds of 5.25.

Juric’s side is well organised and they have done well to stay in the top half of the table, and the draw with Antonio Conte’s Inter shows they should not be taken lightly.

But I Mastini’s season is beginning to fizzle out while Roma still have plenty of serious business to conclude and with Napoli and AC Milan in hot pursuit, a disappointing seventh-placed finish is not out of the question.

Back-to-back wins suggest Roma are hitting form at the right time and should win this contest.

For an alternative bet, the score-line of 2-1 at odds of 8.00 could be a decent long shot.
