Inter Milan vs Juventus
When Inter Milan face Juventus we know we’re in for a classic, we know there will be a battle, and we know that the result, above all, it the most important thing.
And the reigning champions are about to welcome Juventus to Milan for a Sunday showdown with both teams in good form and an array of world class talent on show.
But both Inter and Juventus have ground to make up, currently sitting third and seventh in the Serie A table, and seven and ten points behind leaders Napoli. With the Azzurri starting the season in explosive fashion the latest Serie A 2021 betting odds have placed Inter and Juve as second and third favourites to win the title, at odds of 4.00 and 4.40 respectively.
Both teams come into the game on the back of Champions League victories, Juve away to Saint Petersburg and Inter at home to Tiraspol and we expect a nail-biter at the San Siro on Sunday.
Talking Points
Inter’s Dzeko is pure class
The sale of Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea had fans and pundits wondering how Inter would meet the standards they set in 2020/21. Well the answer has arrived in the shape of 6ft 4in Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko who, with six goals from eight games, is second in the race for the Capocannoniere, just one behind Lazio’s Ciro Immobile. At 35 years of age he’s in the twilight of his career, but you only take a look at the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to see how strikers can stay at the top of the game into their late thirties.
Dzeko came to prominence as a striker with Wolfsburg, scoring at a rate of better than one in two, which persuaded Manchester City to shell out for his services. He scored 50 for the Premier League club and, in March 2018, Dzeko scored his 50th league goal for Roma, becoming the first player to score 50 or more in three of Europe’s top five domestic leagues.
He also became the first Bosnian player to win the Capocannoniere in 2017 with 29 league goals and, with 60 goals in 118 games for Bosnia and Herzegovina, he’s nicknamed ‘Diamond’ by journalists and fans in his homeland and Inter certainly picked up a gem this summer. Meanwhile, Lautaro Martinez, who linked up so well with Romelu Lukaku last season is in great form again with five goals to his name.
Midfield ace Nicolo Barella is top of the Serie A assists race with five assists and he will test the Juventus back line on Sunday, as his team strives to bounce back from a league defeat. Head coach Simone Inzaghi faced his old club Lazio last week and suffered a 3-1 loss, and the last time they played at home in the league Inter were held 2-2 by Atalanta, so the boss is looking for an uptick this weekend.
Allegri going for substance over style
Max Allegri’s return to Juventus as head coach has brought some stability to the club, which seemed uncertain of its identity since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. But the rock solid defence of Giorgio Chiellini and Leo Bonucci has, yet again, become a foundation for success.
And the Old Lady is gathering pace. Since losing to Napoli early in September Juventus’ Serie A 2021 results have been excellent as they have gone on a run of eight wins and a draw, sometimes grinding out the victories, but with an impressive win over Champions League champions Chelsea.
The goals have been shared around, with Alvaro Morata, Moise Kean, Paulo Dybala and Manuel Locatelli all scoring two, and we’re looking for more from Federico Chiesa who impressed mightily at Euro 2020. Young striker Dejan Kulusevski is pushing for a start; he scored a late winner to give Juventus all three points in their Champions League clash away to Zenit St Petersburg on Wednesday, a result which keeps the Old Lady in control of Group H with three wins from three.
History
I Bianconeri have had the better of the head to heads, winning 31 of the 66 encounters with Inter played since 1993, drawing 21 and losing just 14.
These two teams have met four times already in 2021. Last Season Juventus put Inter out of the Coppa Italia in the two-leg semi-final, as well as beating them in Turin. But the last meeting at the San Siro ended in a 2-0 victory for Inter as goals from Arturo Vidal and Nicola Barella took I Nerazzurri level at the top of the league with Milan.
Juventus are unbeaten in nine and are on a run of four consecutive wins away from home and, with seven wins from the last seven, they are in slightly better shape than their hosts, who have won four, drawn two and lost one over the same period.
