Serie A: Lazio’s Challenge Is More Than About Winning The Scudetto

Lazio have been one of the most dangerous teams in Serie A. Before the season was suspended, the Biancocelesti sat at second just behind Juventus in the standings.

With this feat, Simone Inzaghi’s side have defied the Serie A 2020 odds, especially since Juventus were expected to run away with the Scudetto once more while Inter were seen to be the second fiddle yet again.

This season was considered as a breath of fresh air for pundits as mentioned by my fellow SBOBET writer. But if you look at it carefully, Lazio’s resurgence to the top is basically the fruit of the hard work they’ve put in for these past years.

The Biancocelesti took patience and prudence to another level upon building their roster as they were never the big spenders in the European market and instead focused heavily on player development.

As they continue this approach, Lazio should continue to do well for years to come. But given how far they have been through already, a possible championship would have been the perfect icing on the cake for the Biancocelesti.

What are the ramifications for Lazio?

Football action remains on hold in all parts of the globe because of the coronavirus pandemic. And while majority of the big leagues are making plans for a comeback, it remains to be seen on how will that carry out in the next few weeks.

Just last night, the Dutch Eredivisie cancelled their 2019/20 season altogether, which is unfortunate for Ajax since they were denied of a championship.

Serie A is one of the first leagues to suspend their season given their home country was severely hit by COVID-19. And should they cancel the season just like their Dutch counterparts, it will pose huge ramifications.

This season could’ve been arguably Lazio’s best chance at the Serie A championship since they’ve been in superb form over these past few months, especially when they defeated Juventus in the Supercoppa Italia final last year.

Looking back at Lazio’s rise this season

After fiddling around the top-five spots, Lazio had an undefeated run which lasted at least 11 games to give them the table lead momentarily. Although they’ve had bouts of inconsistency and complacency against some of the lower-seeded clubs at the time, the Biancocelesti still took care of business in the end.

Ciro Immobile have had a spectacular season in scoring goals for Lazio. He is leading the league with 29 goals while dishing out seven assists which includes some of the best Serie A 2020 highlights.

He’s been getting a lot of help from his teammates namely Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Felipe Calcedo, Joaquin Correa, and Luis Alberto, as they’ve generated a total of 25 goals and 21 assists this term.

The Biancocelesti currently boast the best goal difference this season, with Atalanta only having scored more goals. At the same time, they are also the league’s best defence.

The squad probably needs more depth. However, the foundations are already there for them to build on to become a consistent threat in Serie A.

Lazio’s real challenge

Of course it would be a waste if the season should be canceled since it would’ve been a golden opportunity for Lazio to get back to winning ways. However, the real challenge for Simone Inzaghi really is maintaining the roster for the long haul especially with the rumour mill gaining some steam.

For one, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has been garnering significant interest from first-class clubs in Europe – with PSG, Manchester United, and rivals Juventus all in the mix.

The Serbian sensation is technically locked up with Lazio all the way until 2024 so nabbing him would come at a steep price. But for sure that won’t deter the aforementioned teams in breaking the bank for him.

Ciro Immobile has been getting interest as well. Carlo Ancelotti is apparently a huge fan of the attacker which is why Everton are pushing to acquire him. The Toffees have reportedly put Moise Kean on sale in order to sweeten a possible deal.

Argentinean speedster Joaquin Correa has been also eyed by a Premier League team. In a report by CittaCeleste, champions-elect Liverpool are willing to pay £52-M to acquire his services.

Simone Inzaghi should prioritize on maintaining these three for a considerable amount of time because we all know that while getting on top is difficult, staying there is on a different level altogether.
