Premier League: Party Time at the Etihad Amidst a Fond Farewell

Manchester City vs Aston Villa

A day of celebration and reflection awaits at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon, yet for the hosts it may all feel a little surreal.

That is because they are preparing to say goodbye to the most successful manager the club has ever known.

Wherever you place him in the pantheon of great coaches – and let’s face it, as far as the Premier League is concerned, only Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho could legitimately claim to push him out of second spot – no-one can deny the impact Pep Guardiola has had on every club he’s ever managed or the way he believes football should be played.

Yes, he has always taken over clubs with huge resources, but in almost every scenario, he has made already successful sides even better.

Now, a decade after arriving at Eastlands, he is hopeful of delivering one final set of Premier League 2026 highlights.

Talking Points

As the home faithful come to honour their departing hero, partly frustrated they have had to settle for the runners-up spot in the title race, they also know that last week’s FA Cup triumph means the Spaniard has led their men to 17 major trophies since he arrived 10 years ago (a tally they could only have dreamed of).

In truth, there should be a party atmosphere as domestic cup double winners City welcome Aston Villa and a manager I believe has outperformed all his counterparts again this term.

Unai Emery may have guided Villa to the top six of English football in successive seasons with a fraction of the resources of his compatriots, but Wednesday night’s Europa League triumph was a new benchmark; a night to savour for all associated with the Midlands club, not least Emery who has transformed this sleeping giant since taking charge in the autumn of 2022.

The celebrations from Istanbul could mean Villa, in fourth place, take their foot off the gas in the final outing, yet City are assured of a second place finish too so both sides can afford to relax with Champions League football secured.

While both managers may rest some key men, I do expect both defender John Stones and captain Bernardo Silva to start for the hosts as they also prepare to depart for pastures new.

And who knows, perhaps fans of both clubs will be treated to seeing their respective trophies on display before kick-off.

History

A traditional English football match-up, City have 82 victories overall compared to 60 Villa successes and 42 draws.

You have to go back to April 2007, a year before the Sheikh Mansour takeover, to the last time Villa won at the Etihad Stadium in the top flight – a 2-0 triumph, courtesy of goals from John Carew and Shaun Maloney.

They did win 4-2 on City soil in 2012 in a League Cup third round tie, a game won in extra-time with Agbonlahor and Charles N’Zogbia claiming the crucial goals.

Fifteen successive home league wins in this fixture include a 2-1 triumph last term when Matheus Nunes grabbed a last-gasp winner after Silva and Marcus Rashford (penalty), then on loan at Villa, had traded early goals.

Villa have won the last three on their own turf though, including 1-0 earlier this season when Matty Cash scored the only goal of the contest.

Their most famous meeting this century was on the final day of the 2021-22 season; a quite brilliant triumph as City scored three times in six second half minutes to overcome a 2-0 deficit and clinch the Premier League title.

The inaugural clash was in Division One in October 1899 at Villa Park which the home side won 2-1, courtesy of goals from John Devey and Fred Wheldon (penalty).

Betting Tip

City have won 19 of their 20 most recent top flight home games against Villa and the SBOTOP Premier League 2026 betting odds expect that record to continue.

They actually haven’t lost a league encounter since defeat in the Manchester derby in January (won 10, drawn five).

Don’t jump in too quickly though as Villa have triumphed in three of their last five meetings.

I do expect the hosts to edge this one as they pay homage to their boss.

Priced 1X2 @ 1.25 and Asian Handicap -1.75 @ 1.90, the odds contrast greatly with Villa who are on offer 1X2 @ 7.50 and Asian Handicap +1.50 @ 2.19.

I am actually going to opt for a complete repeat of the meeting last season and my *** tip is Correct Score 2-1 @ 9.20 as City sign off on the Guardiola era with a swagger.
