Premier League: A South Coast Salvo with Big Permutations

Bournemouth vs Manchester City

If the Premier League title race is going to go to the wire, then Manchester City head to the south coast on Tuesday knowing only victory will suffice.

Sure, I write this before leaders and favourites Arsenal host relegated Burnley, but assuming the shock of all shocks doesn’t occur, then Pep Guardiola’s men have no room for error.

Their hosts, Bournemouth, have been one of the teams of the season for me – arguably THE team of the season.

Talking Points

To lose a trio of key men last summer was a blow, Ilya Zabarnyi (to PSG for £63 million), Dean Huijsen (to Real Madrid for £62.5 million) and Milos Kerkez (to Liverpool for £46.9 million).

To then lose footballer of the year contender Antoine Semenyo in January (to City) had the potential to cause even more of an impact.

Yet the Cherries, under the impressive management of Andoni Iraola, have thrived as the Spaniard has created a spirit and team ethic possibly greater than the sum of its parts.

The visit of City to the Vitality Stadium marks the final game of his three year tenure.

It has been a period which fans of the club, which had never been in the top flight until just over a decade ago, will cherish and that has continued this term as he has mastermind victories over Arsenal and Liverpool to name just two.

The finest achievement could still be to come, however, as defeat City and this proud club will move one step closer to not only achieving European football for the first time in its history, but keep alive hopes of qualifying for the Champions League no less.

City’s place in that has long been secured, of course.

But the fact that Guardiola’s side are facing such hungry opponents, just three days after their FA Cup Final success – courtesy of some Semenyo magic – is possibly not the fixture they would have chosen in the final week of the campaign.

Premier League: Antoine Semenyo recently scored for Manchester City in their FA Cup final against Chelsea.

Both sides are near full strength with the suspended Ryan Christie the only known absentee for the home side. Meanwhile Rodri may not be risked after playing just over an hour in the FA Cup Final – although perhaps he is just being managed carefully following a spell on the sidelines.

Bournemouth and City have both delivered Premier League 2026 highlights aplenty in recent months – the next set could be the most important of the lot.

History

Bournemouth have only defeated City once in history – although given the sides had never met until 1987, that perhaps should not come as a total surprise.

The victory in question arrived in the corresponding meeting last season.

It was a contest in which goals from Semenyo and Evanilson sealed a 2-1 win with Josko Gvardiol pulling one back late on.

That actually triggered a series of results which ruined City’s title defence and left them so off the pace, their previous level of aura has never quite returned (until arguably the last few months).

In addition, it meant City failed in their attempt to equal the top division record of 15 consecutive wins against the same opposition, set by Chelsea v West Bromwich Albion (November 1984 to August 2011).

City have beaten Bournemouth in all of their three meetings since then.

That included the quarter-finals of last season’s FA Cup and two home league matches, including an earlier game this season, in early November, when a double from Erling Haaland and one from Nico O’Reilly sealed a 3-1 success. Tyler Adams had briefly levelled for Iraola’s men.

Overall, City have won 22 of their meetings with a further two draws.

Betting Tip

The SBOTOP Premier League 2026 betting odds make attractive reading with a variety of bets.

City are naturally favourites, priced 1X2 @ 1.76 and Asian Handicap -0.75 @ 1.99 and -1.00 @ 2.28.

The Cherries can be backed 1X2 @ 3.72 and Asian Handicap +0.50 @ 2.16.

A re-run of last season’s meeting is on offer @ 13.50 with Correct Score 2-1.

If you fancy a few goals, then can I point you in the direction of Over 3.50 @ 2.21, Total Goal 2-3 @ 2.23 and 4-6 @ 2.41.

How much an energy-sapping FA Cup Final has taken out of City remains to be seen but it certainly will have taken some toll.

And with the Cherries chasing the most lucrative carrot in the club’s history, I think they can do themselves the power of good, give Iraola a fitting send-off and damage the visitors’ title bid.
