Premier League: Wolves and Spurs belong in Europe

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Tottenham Hotspur

All roads lead to Molyneux on Sunday afternoon, especially if you like high tempo, attacking football.

Sunday’s clash in the West Midlands, Premier League: Wolves vs Spurs, pitches together two teams bursting with ambition, managed by two greatly admired Portuguese coaches and with realistic demands for European football.

Both are currently on the European stage, Spurs in the Champions League while Wolves are thriving in the Europa League after a spectacular return to top flight football last season.

Nuno Espirito Santo has packed his side with some of Portugal’s best players and they have gelled well with stalwarts of the club, and his team is currently in sixth place, a single point and place above Jose Mourinho’s Spurs.

The Wolves vs Spurs betting odds point to a fascinating clash, with the hosts at 3.15 to win, Spurs at 2.21 and the draw at 3.30. One thing we can guarantee…is entertainment.

Talking Points

Wolves 11 unbeaten

After a pretty slow start to the campaign while Nuno’s squad got used to the Thursday/Sunday routine of Europa League football, Wolves have roared back and extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to 11 games after drawing 2-2 away to Brighton last week. Diogo Jota was on target twice to earn the point and he’s one of a number of creative players delighting the Molyneux crowd week after week.

Midfield maestro Joao Moutinho is a class act, with quick feet and an ability to spread play from left to right with an array of passing skills, and striker Raul Jimenez has been the main beneficiary, top scoring in the league with six. With skipper Conro Coady holding together a back three and wing-back Matt Doherty effective in defence and attack, this Wolves side looks to have a good balance.

They have certainly made a good fist of their first Europa League campaign, qualifying for the knockout stages with ten points from five games in Group K.

Jose’s Spurs scoring for fun

16 goals from five games probably wasn’t the most expected impact of Jose Mourinho in his first three weeks in charge. Better organisation, high tempo commitment and clean sheets would have been no surprise, but then Jose always likes to keep us on our toes!

Spurs put in their best performance under Mourinho so far in a 5-0 annihilation of Burnley last week. Heung-Min Son scored the best of the goals, picking up the ball on the edge of his own penalty area before running the length of the field past five defenders and finishing coolly past Nick Pope. He can’t expect the Wolves defence to part quite as helpfully as did Burnley’s, but nevertheless it was fine individual goal.

But the week before the Whites did show their vulnerability, losing 2-1 to Manchester United. In fact, not only was the Burnley result Mourinho’s first clean sheet in charge at Spurs, it was the first game in which his team didn’t concede twice, though he won three of the first four games.

Dele Alli has come to life under the new boss and, alongside the ever reliable Harry Kane, he’s a constant threat in this mood.

History

The head to head results are marginally in the visitors’ favour; Wolves have won three, drawn two and lost five to Spurs over the last ten games.

This fixture finished 2-3 last season when Wolves gave their opponents a real fright, coming back from 0-3 down with two second half penalties, but Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs held on for the win.

It will be a tough task for Mourinho to match that achievement, though he won his first two Premier League games as Spurs boss by that score-line. Wolves lost their first home game, but have been unbeaten in the seven since, winning three and drawing four.

Betting Tip

??
Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Tottenham Hotspur Over 2.50 @ 1.93
December 15, 23:00 (GMT+8)

Our latest pre-match odds here at SBOBET leave all three results in play, and a draw at odds of 3.30 possibly seems the most likely outcome between two in-form sides.

I’m certainly expecting goals. Both teams are oozing with attacking talent, and only a quarter of the last 12 games involving these two sides have yielded fewer than three goals, and all three of those games had two.

This match has all the promise to be one of the most entertaining clashes of the season so far and, of course, we’ll be back on Sunday afternoon with all the Wolves vs Spurs updates as they happen.
