We all know that Liverpool have the Premier League title already in the bag as they can almost touch it now, according to our Premier League 2020 odds. But that doesn’t mean that they will be resting on their laurels any time soon.
Jurgen Klopp’s men are still relentless in grabbing points off of their poor opponents, making their lead as insurmountable as it can get. And yes, they are yet to be defeated this season.
With that said, preparations for the next season and beyond are in order for them to stay at the pantheon of English football, and team boss Jurgen Klopp is expected to look for more ways to improve his roster.
Last week, RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner made an interesting comment about the Reds since he’s linked to a possible move over at Anfield — and that sparked several rumours on whether he’ll join the team any time soon.
His remarks appeared to be harmless yet suggestive, which left SBOBET football fans to wonder on whether a blockbuster move is set to occur.
Timo Werner rise to stardom
Timo Werner is obviously one of the hottest commodities in football. The 23-year-old forward has been nothing short of spectacular as he’s led RB Leipzig to championship contender status in the Bundesliga this season.
He also helped them secure their first Champions League Round of 16 spot for the first time in club history. With a victory over Tottenham just the other day, the Red Bulls are primed to go on a deep run in the competition.
Werner is one of the leading scorers in the Bundesliga, notching 21 goals and seven assists so far this season. But what’s really impressive to me is that he has shown great poise and maturity by meshing well with his talented teammates.
The German national has formed a wonderful partnership with the likes of Marcel Sabitzer, Emil Forsberg, and Patrik Schick under the high-tempo, free-flowing system of team manager Julian Nagelsmann.
With an otherworldly talent like this, of course, various teams are coming out to get him. Besides Liverpool, other European powerhouses such as Barcelona and Manchester United are already linked to him as well.
How will Werner fit at Liverpool?
Werner’s versatility, speed, and youth are key elements that are intriguing to Liverpool, but pundits question on how he’ll fit in Jurgen Klopp’s stacked deck.
They already have the likes of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino in their primes at the attack while Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, and Gini Wijnaldum play at the midfield, so playing time will be a huge concern if ever.
Tactics-wise, Werner is an outright striker capable of producing some of the best Premier League 2020 highlights with his ability to drift out wide plus he’s an adept creator. But he doesn’t offer much defensive chops like Roberto Firmino and a slight improvement on that end will be very welcome to Liverpool’s vaunted press.
By the looks of it, Werner’s main competition for playing time will be Sadio Mane and Mo Salah as they all play essentially the same role. But more than anything, Werner will be a viable contingency plan should either Mane or Salah bolt Anfield for other opportunities.
The Reds’ attacking duo is reportedly on the wish list of Real Madrid, but no moves are imminent as of the moment.
Will Liverpool really go for it?
Werner had been fielding offers already from different teams, but it’s interesting to know that he’s been reportedly holding out Barcelona and Manchester United to wait for Liverpool’s offer.
During a recent interview with Sky Sports Germany, the RB Leipzig striker heaped praise to Jurgen Klopp’s side which adds more fuel to the fire. But at the same time, he also bared that his focus remains with the Red Bulls for now.
“There’s one of the best managers in the world with Jurgen Klopp, and he is also German. Many things suggest that I would maybe fit in very well with my playing style. But I don’t think about that at the moment because we have so much to do with Leipzig,” said Werner.
The first few sentences are music to the ears of Jurgen Klopp of course, but Liverpool’s manager remains tight-lipped about the issue for now.
It’s also worth noting that Liverpool have already raided RB Leipzig in the past. They pried away Naby Keita from them in 2018, so there’s a strong possibility that they’ll do it once more.
Moreover, with the lack of major purchases this season and their success in Europe, it’s likely that the Reds will have the financial capability to pull this off. Whether it’s a good fit or not, the prospect of acquiring Werner may be too good to pass up.
