Tottenham welcome Brighton to London on Sunday evening, but the friendliness will end at 7-15pm local time when Spurs will be all out for three points.
Graham Potter’s Seagulls will be aiming for a win too, but they’d settle for one point right now as they prepare to face arguably the most potent attack in the Premier League. Kane and Son’s lethal partnership
Even when Tottenham looked to be having an off night during the Monday fixture away to Burnley, the two hit men combined to strike late in the game to snatch another three points.
In an amazing run of form these two have worked together to produce nine goals already this season. Kane has assisted seven for Son, and the South Korean has returned the compliment twice, while leading the Premier League scoring charts on eight goals, while Kane is on five.
They are now the second most lethal partnership in Premier League history, having combined 29 times. They have matched Arsenal Invincibles Thierry Henry and Robert Pires, as well as Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero and David Silva. Only the current Chelsea manager Frank Lampard and his Blues Brother Didier Drogba can boast more combinations, with 36 during their time together at Stamford Bridge.
Surely it is now just a matter if time before Kane and Son overhaul the Chelsea legends.
At the other end of the pitch, a striking feature of Tottenham’s victory at Turf Moor was how well organised and protected Spurs’ back four was, even Kane clearing a Burnley chance off his own line, and that was a far cry from the performance which allowed West Ham to come back from 3-0 down to claim a point against Mourinho’s men.
The boss wasn’t pleased last night though, when he made nine changes for a Europa League defeat in Antwerp. He hooked Dele Alli, Steven Bergwijn and Gio Lo Celso at half time, saying they have given him an easy selection choice for Sunday. Expect the side which beat Burnley, including midfield anchor Tanguy Ndombele, to return.
No Dunk gives Seagulls a problem
When head coach Graham Potter took over from Chris Hughton at Brighton he vowed to bring attractive football to the Amex Stadium. At times the Seagulls have been easy on the eye, but the main reason they survived last season was the rock solid centre back pairing of Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy.
Well Duffy headed off to Celtic in the Scottish league, leaving his mate Dunk at the Amex. But the Brighton skipper will be missing on Sunday too having been red carded during the Seagulls draw with Crystal Palace. This is his second of three games out of the side; Brighton drew the first with fellow strugglers West Brom 1-1 when the Baggies got a late equaliser through Karlan Grant.
There could be a return for Davy Propper as the midfielder is back in training having recovered from an Achilles injury, while French striker Neal Maupay will hope to add to his four goals.
History
Spurs have had much the better of the Premier League encounters between these two teams, having won seven lost one and drawn one. They came out on top in this fixture last season, goals from Kane and Alli earning a 2-1 victory.
This season, while Spurs’ Premier League 2020 results have been largely going to plan, unbeaten in five at home, the Seagulls haven’t had a win in five games.
