Everton 1-3 Manchester City
Manchester City kept the pressure up on Liverpool with a tea-time victory over Everton at Goodison Park, picking apart the Toffees in a scintillating second half.
After Dominic Calvert-Lewin had cancelled out Gabriel Jesus’ opener, City stormed back with two second-half goals to run out comfortable winners.
Both teams came into the game on the back of Carabao Cup wins but the Premier League is a significantly higher priority for both clubs. The Sky Blues want to make it three titles on the bounce, while Everton are overdue in their aim to break into the top six.
With most of the Premier League 2019 results for this weekend in, the one which caught the eye of both Everton and Manchester City fans, for very different reasons, was Liverpool’s fortunate 0-1 win at Sheffield United, which stretched the gap at the top of the table, temporarily, to eight points.
Everton boss Marco Silva has been coming under increasing pressure after a poor start to the campaign. He’s currently leading the sack race, with many pundits tipping him to be the first Premier League boss to lose his job this term.
The Premier League 2019 betting odds will shift as the season twists and turns but Pep Guardiola will be a happy man tonight.
Highlights of the game
Following up a shock defeat to Norwich City with an 8-0 annihilation of Watford seemed to suggest the Sky Blues are done with generosity, and they set about Everton as if they meant business. Riyad Mahrez put a dangerous ball into the six-yard box but Ilkay Gundogan missed from point-blank range.
When the Sky Blues went ahead, it was a moment of pure quality by Kevin de Bruyne, picking out Jesus at the back post and the Brazilian headed past Jordan Pickford to score his 49th goal for Manchester City.
But Everton were level just after the half-hour mark when Alex Iwobi managed to set Seamus Coleman free. The full-back then chipped the ball over Ederson for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to nod home and send the Goodson Park crowd into ecstasy.
The Toffees had a great chance on 54 minutes, but Ederson kept City level with a brilliant reaction save from Yerry Mina, who had a free header from six yards.
The Sky Blues should have gone ahead on the hour when Riyad Mahrez slid a pass through to Sterling, and as everyone expected the net to bulge the English forward inexplicably rolled the ball the wrong side of the post.
But Mahrez did the job himself on 71 minutes when he curled a free-kick beautifully inside Pickford’s right-hand post.
Ederson was called on again on 74 minutes when Calvert-Lewin was clean through, but the keeper made himself big and diverted the ball wide. And the City keeper made another outstanding save to keep out a header from Mina.
It was game over though when City raided down the right flank, and Sergio Aguero crossed for Sterling to get his goal, smashing the ball home off the underside of the bar.
Key Statistics
Manchester City have made it four consecutive wins against Everton, and the Toffees have only beaten the Sky Blues once in 13 games.
The Sky Blues are yet to lose a game in which Gabriel Jesus has started and scored, now for the 33rd time. And the Brazilian has scored five in five games against Everton.
Pep’s team has now scored in 29 games in a row, but Silva needs more steel in his team.
When going behind, Everton have recouped just four points from 22 Premier League games during his reign.
What’s next?
The Sky Blues are back to Champions League action on Tuesday with the visit of Dynamo Zagreb to the Etihad Stadium. And then Pep’s team have a home game against Wolves in the league. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are struggling to cope with the Thursday/Sunday madness of the Europe League but have plenty of quality.
We’ll be across all the action right here at SBOBET with previews, tips and the highlights as they happen.
The Toffees are coming up against two cases of Claret over the next few weeks; a tough trip to Burnley is followed by a home game against West Ham. Marco Silva needs to find a solution to his current challenge of winning points when his side plays well.
Neither the Clarets nor the Hammers will be easy to beat.
