Liverpool vs Newcastle United
Newcastle United heads to Merseyside for the Saturday Lunchtime kick-off but it’s going to be anything but a picnic!
The Magpies are the next team to face up to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool. So far four have tried and four have failed to live with the Premier League leaders, so what hope does Steve Bruce’s Newcastle have?
Well, our SBOBET tips have to be realistic, and with the Reds at 1.15 to win and the Magpies way out at 19.50, it’s got to be either a big Asian Handicap bet or number of goals. Put it this way; having watched Liverpool dismantle Burnley a couple of weeks ago I’m not tempted by 19.50!
There have been some spectacular battles between these two sides over the years but their fortunes have taken different paths, as Newcastle has bounced between the top two divisions while Liverpool has gone up and up, winning the Champions League for a sixth time in May.
Talking Points
Klopp’s Reds are ready for anything
The Reds took apart a normally tough nut to crack in Burnley before the international break. They needed a slice of luck to get going, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross taking a flick off Burnley’s Chris Wood and looping over Nick Pope and into the net. But for the remaining hour the Reds played like potential champions.
In Virgil Van Dijk they have a man mountain at the back, and with the front three of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino picking themselves; it’s the midfield which has impressed the most so far. Georginio Wijnaldum is in the form of his life, and alongside Fabinho and Jordan Henderson is part of a unit which is strong and creative in equal measure.
Klopp’s team has already proved it can handle the top teams this season, beating Unai Emery’s Arsenal 3-1 after the Gunners had started the season with back to back wins.
It would be the biggest Premier League 2019 news of the weekend if Newcastle can somehow stop the Reds.
Early Hope at Newcastle
But hey, the Magpies have already upset one of the Big Six this season. The Geordies sprung a huge surprise at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, stunning Spurs with a 0-1 smash and grab win, with a little help from VAR which denied Spurs a clear penalty. But you need those bits of luck when you’re at the bottom of the league. Joelinton scored the winner, and Geordie fans will be hoping he can continue to improve and be comfortable in the famous Number Nine shirt.
That result was followed by a 1-1 home draw with bottom club Watford, which will have prompted mixed feelings at the club. Any point is welcome but they missed a chance against the Hornets who had lost their first three. Since signing from Deportivo La Coruna defender Fabian Schar has become a fans favourite in Newcastle, and has a fierce shot on him, as Ireland discovered when he scored for Switzerland in a recent Euro 2020 qualifier. An when he equalised against Watford before half time, the passionate home crowd willed Newcastle on to a win which never came.
Schar will be a key man at the back on Saturday, as will keeper Martin Dubravka, who can expect a busier time than he had against Spurs. While the Whites had 17 shots that day, only two were on target!
History
Past meetings lead our Liverpool vs Newcastle United tips to lean even further towards the Reds. In the 49 games in the Premier League era Newcastle has managed 11 wins and there have been ten draws, while Liverpool has won 28.
The last meeting was a 2-3 victory for the Reds in Newcastle, and Liverpool won the corresponding fixture at Anfield last season by 4-0.
And Liverpool hasn’t lost at home against Newcastle on the last 24 occasions.
Betting Tip
Liverpool vs Newcastle United | First Half Over 1.50 @ 2.08 | |
September 14, 19:30 (GMT+8) |
So we can take it Newcastle is highly unlikely to make it a second away win of the season this weekend. Even the draw at 6.60 is a very big ask.
As a player with Manchester United, Bruce had a lot of success against Liverpool but that was a different Liverpool than we see now. Having pushed Manchester City so close last season the Reds look even more determined this term, and with an outstanding home record, they aren’t about to let up against the Magpies.
Over 1.50 goals in the first half looks like the best value bet to me, and I expect them to both come from Liverpool.
