Ligue 1: French Top-Flight Optimistic For an Early Return

The Ligue de Football Professionel (LFP) has been mulling on a potential comeback by the Ligue 1 in as early as mid-June according to several reports.

Since March 13, the top two divisions of French football were shut down indefinitely amid the pandemic that has caused a major disruption in terms of planning and scheduling for future events.

With France severely hit with the coronavirus pandemic, lockdown measures were implemented by the government, which forced people to go into quarantine as well as suspending public events including the huge sport leagues.

As it stands now, PSG are still holding the highest Ligue 1 2020 odds of winning the championship since they sit atop the Ligue 1 table with 68 points while Marseille and Rennes hold the second and third spots with 56 and 50 points, respectively.

Despite PSG looking to be the runaway leaders for their third consecutive title, they are in the same quandary with Liverpool since they’re in danger of not being officially crowned if their respective leagues would not resume.

Either way, PSG have had a great run this term and they appear to still be in great shape for the foreseeable future since they’re very active in the transfer market.

For today, allow SBOBET to give you a quick roundup of Ligue 1 2020 updates.

Will the 2019/20 Ligue 1 season resume in June?

The LFP committee are heavily considering a return for French top-flight, with a proposed schedule that will start either on June 3 or 17.

All teams are scheduled to play once in every three days and they plan on wrapping up the current season by July 25.

The proposal wasn’t received well by the co-president of the National Union of Professional Footballers Sylvain Kastendeuch, who touched upon the increased risk of injury for players since they’ll be rushed back into action.

Nonetheless, the LFP has issued their intentions in an official statement while awaiting for recommendations as well for the Champions League calendar.

“The bureau of the board of directors unanimously voted on April 10 for the resumption of Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 championships to finish by July 25, and a commencement on August 22 and 23, 2020 of the 2020/21 season. This provides a restart of the 2019/20 season on June 17, 2020,” said in their official statement.

“The LFP is now awaiting the deconfinement procedures that the government will announce at the end of April, and in particular the conditions under which the matches could be played behind closed doors.”

“The LFP is also awaiting UEFA’s recommendations, which will be presented to its executive committee on April 23, as well as Champions League match calendar,” the statement added.

Are PSG in danger to lose their stars in the transfer window?

Much of the transfer talks in Ligue 1 have circled around PSG since they have been very active in the market.

For starters, the Thomas Tuchel-managed team have been eyeing Juventus defender Miralem Pjanic in order to reinforce their defence, especially since they aren’t expected to retain the services of Mauro Icardi.

But the elephant in the room remains on what the club will do with the trio of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, and Edinson Cavani since they have been some of the hottest commodities in European football.

It doesn’t help either when club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi admitted that his team could be in financial peril because of the coronavirus since they won’t be earning the money that they get from sponsorship deals unless the Ligue 1 season concludes in full.

Real Madrid are reportedly eyeing this situation and they will be expected to pounce on the opportunity to nab Kylian Mbappe should they smell blood.

On the other hand, both Neymar and Barcelona are reportedly mulling about a possible reunion should things go bad with PSG in the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s prospective new owners are going to try to swing for the fences in the transfer window, with names such as Edinson Cavani and Napoli’s Dries Mertens being on top of their wish list.

Cavani, 33, has been a vital part for PSG’s title run over these past few seasons as he scored 200 goals in his 300 appearances. However, he fell out of favour following Mauro Icardi’s arrival with the club over this past term.
