Atletico Madrid vs Sevilla
All eyes are on Madrid this weekend for the big La Liga clash, where top four chasing Sevilla visits Atletico Madrid.
Atletico needs just a single point to guarantee second place ahead of Real Madrid, while the visitors desperately need a win to keep their Champions League hopes alive; and that’s what makes La Liga Atletico Madrid vs Sevilla the Spanish game of the weekend.
The Andalusians have a rocky patch at the wrong time, with just two games remaining, and this is about the last fixture head coach Joaquin Caparros would have picked at such a crucial moment. Los Hispalenses need two wins, starting at the Wanda Metropolitano, and hope that Getafe and Valencia both slip up.
Diego Simeone’s side pushed Barcelona for much of the season until defeat at the Camp Nou early in April and are now heading for the beach. But there’s no way Simeone will allow his players to set off early!
It’s a fascinating clash; so let’s take a closer look at the form, the head-to-heads and the latest Atletico Madrid vs Sevilla betting odds.
But first our tribute, here at SBOBET, to a departing Atleti Legend.
Talking Points
Farewell to Diego Godin
We’re not alone in being long time admirers of Los Rojiblancos’ defence, for a few seasons now the finest in Europe, better than the group of defensive units that dominate Serie A, and better than anything in the Premier League. And the man who has been at the heart of this incredible rearguard, Diego Godin has announced he’s on his way at the end of the season.
In his nine years at the Wanda Metropolitano the Uruguayan rock has played 387 times, and helped his side to win La Liga in 2014, along with two Europa League titles, one Copa del Rey and two Champions League final appearances. The 33 year old’s biggest regret is that his team couldn’t beat fierce rivals Real Madrid in either of those two finals.
Nevertheless this has been a golden period for Atleti, and Godin leaves them, almost certainly, looking down on Los Blancos. It looks like Godin could be heading to Inter Milan, they’ll love him there!
But it does leave another defensive headache for Simeone, as wing back Lucas Hernandez has already agreed to join FC Bayern.
Antoine Griezmann is the only Atleti player to hit double figures in the league this season, and his 15 goals are probably fewer than he had hoped for at the start of the campaign. But, along with Godin, the Frenchman has been instrumental in so many Los Rojiblancos victories, scoring winners while the defence completes shutouts.
Could this be Godin’s last 1-0 home win?
Have Sevilla’s Wheels fallen off?
Three defeats in five have left Joaquin Caparros’ side in sixth place, and three points behind Getafe in fourth. Sevilla’s home defeat to Leganes, last week, was a serious blow to their top four hopes, coming on the back of a defeat to Girona. They had the Champions League place in their grasp just a fortnight ago, and skipper Jesus Navas has a tough task on to lift his side. Sevilla has been the favourite to grab the invaluable fourth place in La Liga for most of the season, and now they are outsiders.
He has the firepower up front. Wissam Ben Yedder has 17 goals while creative midfielder Pablo Sarabia has 11. The question is…do they have the guile and the spirit to beat a rock solid defensive wall?
History
It might come as a surprise that the visitors have had the better of the head-to-head Atletico Madrid vs Sevilla results, but the rivalry has been close. In the 52 games played since 1993, Los Hispalenses have won 19 to Atleti’s 17 while there have been 16 draws.
But recent form is rather less encouraging for the visitors. While Sevilla misfires, Los Rojiblancos have won the last seven at home.
Betting Tip
Atletico Madrid vs Sevilla | Atletico Madrid 1×2 @ 2.19 | |
May 13, 00:30(GMT+8) |
Sevilla has to go for a win in this game and, away to Atletico Madrid that means a once in a season performance. An away win at odds of 3.25 is the only result which will keep Caparros’ team in the hunt, while a draw at odds of 3.20 will probably see them playing in next season’s Europa League.
But they are not in a rich vein of form. So how can we expect them to come to life when it’s almost certainly too late? Add to that Diego Godin’s emotional farewell to Atletico and the unifying effect that will have on the hosts, I can see another clean sheet for Simeone’s men… and a big moment for Griezmann.
