K-League: Daegu Keen to Continue Domination over Gangwon

Gangwon FC vs Daegu FC

Daegu FC suffered a humiliating defeat last time out to the K-League‘s bottom club, Incheon United, who had previously been winless this season.

It was a disastrous result for Daegu, who have been in a disappointing run of form over the last month.

Daegu will look to turn things around as they make the trip to Gangwon to face the struggling Kodiaks. Gangwon’s winless run is now up to five games after a draw against Gwangju last week.

The K-League 2020 betting odds between these two out-of-form clubs are close, but Daegu have had overwhelming success against Gangwon in recent years and will be eager to keen Gangwon’s slide going.

Talking Points

Gangwon still can’t get going

Gangwon had a chance to snap their current winless skid against Gwangju, but they failed as they could only get a 2-2 draw. Despite controlling 64 per cent of possession and seven shots on target, Gangwon still couldn’t get that much-needed victory.

They started out brightly and took the lead through Kim Seung-Dae, but Gwangju came back with two goals of their own. Luckily, Moo-Yol Go equalised in the 82nd minute to give the Kodiaks a share of the spoils.

Gangwon’s recent K-League 2020 results have been disastrous. They have now failed to win in five straight games (three draws, two losses). Moreover, they’ve won just once in their last 11 matches, with four draws and six losses as the pressure continues to build on manager Kim Byung-soo.

Their defence, which has struggled all season long, once again let them down. They’ve now conceded two goals in each of their last three games and have given up 26 goals overall this season.

Meanwhile, the attack played well — they’ve scored two goals twice in their last three games — but it remains inconsistent.

They will be hoping Moo-Yol Go’s goal will get him back on track. Go is the team’s leading scorer with six goals this season, but his goal against Gwangju was his first after going scoreless in his last six games.

Daegu in disarray

Daegu FC are in disarray at the moment. They suffered an embarrassing 1-0 defeat at home to bottom-club Incheon United, who had previously been winless.

That loss was Daegu’s fourth in their last six league outings; two of those losses were also at home, albeit against the top two in the league, Ulsan and Jeonbuk.

Daegu completely dominated Incheon. They had 58 per cent of possession and fired an incredible 28 shots, although only seven were on target.

The high-powered Daegu attack has been misfiring during their recent slump. Excluding the three goals they scored against Busan I’Park, they’ve scored just twice in their last five games.

That Daegu’s attack, which was subpar against Jeonbuk, improved significantly as Cesinha came back from a groin injury while Edgar returned to the starting line-up after being on the bench against Jeonbuk. But despite having their talented Brazilian duo back, they were still missing that bit of cutting edge in the final third.

The two Brazilians played a crucial role in their 2-1 win over Gangwon in their first meeting this season, and Daegu will be counting on them to deliver once again.

On the other side, Daegu’s defence is ranked fourth with just 19 goals conceded in 16 games. But they’ve been quite rocky for a while now; they’ve kept a clean sheet just once in their last 10 games.

History

The recent history between Gangwon and Daegu has been incredibly one-sided. Daegu have won nine out of the last 10 matches against the Kodiaks.

Gangwon have only beaten Gangwon once over the last four years.

Cesinha, who scored a penalty in Daegu’s 2-1 home win over Gangwon in their first meeting this season, has scored five goals in his last three games against Gangwon.

Dae-Won Kim has also been a regular goalscorer against Gangwon, with three goals in his last four.

Betting Tip

??
Gangwon FC vs Daegu FC 1X2 Daegu @ 2.38
August 22, 19:00 (GMT+8)

SBOBET odds have Daegu priced as slight favourites at 2.38, with Gangwon not far behind at 2.72. Meanwhile, a draw is 3.40.

Based on Gangwon’s awful run of form coupled with history, it’s hard to go against Daegu despite their recent hiccups.

They were a little unlucky against Incheon since they did create an incredible number of chances. With Gangwon’s leaky defence, they should be able to create a good number of opportunities, and with the quality of both Cesinha and Edgar, they should be able to put one or two away this time around.
