Hannover’s Amazing Run Continues in the Top Flight!

Hannover 96 2-0 Hamburger SV

After a season that saw Hannover finish second in the 2. Bundesliga, who would have thought they would be sharing the top of the table in the top flight with the top dogs this early in the 2017-18 campaign?

Of course, it’s still premature to sing too much praise for Hannover as they have just played in four football games, but there’s no doubt the way they started surprised both sports betting pundits and online gambling fans.

After all, they not only extended their unbeaten run to 16 games but also climbed to the top of Bundesliga (for at least 24 hours) for the first time since the Apollo 11 moon landing 48 years ago.

Two second-half goals propelled Hannover to victory over northern rivals Hamburg, who were struggling with pace and movement in the absence of the injured US striker Bobby Wood.

In-form Austrian striker Martin Harnik opened the scoring for the home side, pouncing on the ball and poking it home after teammate Niclas Fullkrug headed it in front of the goal in 50 minutes.

Hannover stayed in front after that and kept pressuring Hamburg before sealing the points with a late goal from substitute Ihlas Bebou, who tapped in the rebound from a deflected Felix Klaus free-kick.

Meanwhile, making the matchweek even more memorable, Bayern Munich thrashed Mainz 4-0 as Robert Lewandowski starred for the Bavarians. The Pole striker bagged a second-half brace in his 100th appearance for the club, extending his goal tally for Bayern to 82 and setting a new league record for the most goals scored by a player reaching the century mark for one team.

Schalke, conversely, joined Carlo Ancelotti’s men on nine points with a 2-1 victory over Werder Bremen, thanks to an 83rd-minute winner from Leon Goretzka.

On the other hand, Gladbach and Leipzig shared the spoils at the Red Bull Arena after Dieter Hecking’s outfit twice fought back to pull off a 2-2 draw, while newly-promoted Stuttgart also impressed and returned to winning ways with a 1-0 drubbing of Wolfsburg.
