After a hot start to the season, the Bundesliga returned and lived up to its promise of more intense football games in Matchday 2.
There was action all over Germany, and the likes of Dortmund, Bayern Munich and Hamburger SV didn’t disappoint as they dominated their respective opponents to take command of the betting odds and leave their fans craving for more before the international break.
FC Koln 1-3 Hamburger SV
Hamburg ended up with ten men after the 59th-minute dismissal of Mergim Mavraj, but that wasn’t enough to stop them from punishing the Billy Goats who are still looking for their first win.
Frederik Sorensen gave the hosts some hope with a goal midway through the 13 minutes added time; however, Hamburg’s Lewis Holtby struck minutes later to restore their lead and add to the first-half goals of Andre Hahn and Bobby Wood.

The Bavarians were clearly the better team right from the off, and although it took time before they broke the deadlock, they still managed to get the job done. Robert Lewandowski was once again the hero for the defending champs as he bagged a brace in the second-half, scored just three minutes apart.
Eintracht Frankfurt 0-1 VfL Wolfsburg
Wolfsburg picked up their first win of the season, thanks to Josuha Guilavogui who teed up Daniel Didavi for the opening goal. The Wolves, however, were also lucky that Frankfurt couldn’t find an equaliser despite a number of clear-cut chances to score.
Bayer Leverkusen 2-2 Hoffenheim
Julian Nagelsmann’s Hoffenheim fought back twice to draw with Bayer, showing their fans once again the composure that led them to a fourth-placed finish last year.
Bayer could have gotten all the points after Wendell and Karim Bellarabi put them ahead, with the latter cancelling out Andrej Kramaric’s second-half leveller. Nonetheless, the visitors exploited the hosts’ hesitant defending and punished them through Mark Uth, who converted from a Kerem Demirbay cross in 70 minutes.
Augsburg 2-2 Borussia Monchengladbach
Four goals – three in the first-half – sent the WWK Arena into a frenzy as Augsburg shared the spoils with the feisty Gladbach side. Dieter Hecking’s men thought they won it after Denis Zakaria cancelled out Alfred Finnbogason’s first-minute goal and Oscar Wendt put them in front at the half-hour mark, but Augsburg didn’t give up and continued to attack until Sergio Cordova pulled them back with a last-gasp equaliser.
VfB Stuttgart 1-0 Mainz 05
It’s two losses now in as many games for Mainz after falling to another newly-promoted side. Holger Badstuber rose for the header to give Stuttgart the lead in the second half as the O-Fives are looking like early candidates for relegation.
Borussia Dortmund 2-0 Hertha BSC
Dortmund bagged two goals and another clean sheet to go top of the Bundesliga standings. Nuri Sahin impressed for the hosts as he assisted Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the opening goal before finding the back of the net himself in the second-half. Christian Pulisic also shined bright for BVB as he looks to fill the void left by the departing Ousmane Dembele.
RB Leipzig 4-1 SC Freiburg
The Bulls are back, and they showed it in style with a four-goal drubbing of Freiburg at Red Bull Arena.
It appeared that Leipzig are headed to a second straight loss after Florian Niederlechner put Freiburg ahead before the break, but a second-half barrage led by Timo Werner and Jean-Kevin Augustin ensured the hosts their first points of the season.
It remains to be seen if Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men can keep this form up, but it should provide enough boost when they meet the soaring Hamburg after the break where they are favoured with 1X2 odds at 2.04.
Hannover 96 1-0 Schalke 04
New boys Hannover secured their second 1-0 win after another clinical performance to beat a disjointed Schalke side.
The Royal Blues failed to threaten despite taking down Leipzig last week, and the hosts took the opportunity to carve out real chances until substitute Jonathas found the back of the net in the 67th minute.
If Hannover can continue this disciplined approach, it’s not impossible for them to pull off another upset against Wolfsburg where they are tipped as underdogs at 1X2 @ 4.10.
