It’s a Disappointing Week for Dortmund and the Top Teams

Borussia Dortmund 1-1 Augsburg

In a night filled with protest, online gambling heavyweights Dortmund gave their home fans more reason to get disappointed following their draw with Augsburg.

BVB—who saw a huge decrease in attendance as their fans protested against Monday night games—dropped two crucial points in what is already looking like a tight race for the Champions League places.

Most football betting pundits backed the home team to win comfortably against Augsburg, but a cold second-half display saw the betting odds crash as the visitors drew level 17 minutes from time.

BVB looked sharp right from the kick-off, and it didn’t take long before they went ahead. The deadly trio of Marco Reus, Mario Gotze and Andre Schurrle launched a counter-attack on 16 minutes; and while Schurrle’s cross was half cut out, the ball fell straight to Reus who then fired home straight to the roof of the net.

However, Dortmund seemed to have lost their sense of urgency after the break and looked sloppy in the second half. Augsburg clawed their way back and began to threaten the home team, eventually equalising through a Kevin Danso close-range finish—converting off his own rebound after his header was saved.

Dortmund stayed second despite the result, but they no longer have much lead from the third- to sixth-placed clubs.

Earlier in the weekend, Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich also shared the spoils with Hertha Berlin. The Berliners held the Bavarians to a goalless stalemate, marking the third straight time they drew with the defending champions.

European dreamers Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig, on the other hand, dropped to fifth and sixth respectively after losing their Week 24 matches. Leverkusen fell to Schalke 0-2, while the Red Bulls surprisingly lost to bottom club FC Koln, who staged a brilliant second-half comeback for a 1-2 victory.

At the bottom of the table, Werder Bremen pulled further away from the drop at the expense of relegation-threatened Hamburger SV, while 16th-placed Mainz boosted their survival hopes following a 1-1 draw with 15th-placed Wolfsburg.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Borussia Monchengladbach and VfB Stuttgart, while Hoffenheim and SC Freiburg also split the honours.
