Champions League: The Blues Need a Miracle

Chelsea vs PSG

Chelsea’s 2026 Champions League hopes are hanging by a thread when Paris Saint-Germain are the visitors to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

The Blues took a 5-2 drubbing in the Parc des Princes last week and so they need a three-goal turnaround against the current European and French champions, and Liam Rosenior’s men suffered another setback on Saturday, losing at home to Newcastle United in the Premier League. In the meantime Luis Enrique’s PSG have taken a breather this weekend with their scheduled Ligue 1 match against FC Nantes postponed.

The Champions League 2026 betting odds have recently nudged the French giants among the top four candidates, and there’s little chance of them failing to make the last eight; unless Rosenior and his team can come up with something supremely special.

Talking Points

Chelsea’s penalty area problems

A 1-0 loss at home to Newcastle United has seriously damaged the Blue’s top five plans, particularly with Liverpool looming. Under Rosenior Chelsea have played some expansive football, and have scored pretty freely, but against the Magpies they drew a league blank for the first time under their new leader. Newcastle were set up to frustrate and deny the Blues room to play and, once they had gone ahead through Anthony Gordon, they held their hosts at arms length, and Chelsea didn’t have a response.

The Blues had 22 shots, but many of them speculative and slightly desperate, with only three of the 22 troubling Toon keeper Aaron Ramsdale, and the normally clinical Joao Pedro was firing blanks, while the half time introduction of Liam Delap had little effect.

PSG will be no easier to score against than the Geordies but Chelsea have plenty to worry about at the other end of the pitch too, conceding 12 goals in their last six outings, including two against Wrexham in the FA Cup. Rosenior has taken the curious step of rotating his goalkeeper in recent weeks, and it might just be possible that his defence is struggling with the strategy. Last week Filip Jorgensen came in for Robert Sanchez but the Danish stopper had a moment to forget when his sloppy pass out of defence gifted PSG the chance to make it 3-2 at a point when the tie was in the balance; and then the Blues collapsed.

Sanchez was between the sticks against Newcastle and it would be a brave decision to change the number one position again on Tuesday.

Kvaradona is pure class

PSG have a real battle on their home front to defend their Ligue 1 title and, towards the end of the league phase their Champions League 2026 results left the holders with a play-off date against AS Monaco to navigate, which they did narrowly thanks to a 5-4 aggregate win. But any doubts lingering that PSG would struggle to cope with Chelsea’s young guns were swept away in a 20 minute blitz at the end of the game. Firstly Vitinha benefited from Jorgensen’s error and then Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia took the tie away from the Blues with a late double, the first a sensational strike from long distance.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will once again spearhead PSG in beating Chelsea to advance to the Champions League quarter-finals

Kvaratskhelia also scored a crucial goal in the second leg play-off against Monaco and the 25-year old is always the man for the big occasion. With Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembele alongside him up front, his fleet of foot and trickery can cause panic in a defence and make space for his co strikers.

And remember, Chelsea need to score at least three goals; and, against a centre back pairing of Marquinhos and Willian Pacho that is easier said than done.

History

Both clubs are former winners, in fact Chelsea have won the Champions League twice, in 2012 and 2021, while PSG finally won their first European crown last season.

The Parisians nudged in front in the head to head results last week, in spectacular fashion, and now lead the Blues by four wins to three and there have been five draws. And the Ligue 1 side won 2-1 on their last visit to Stamford Bridge, back in 2016.

With two wins, one draw and three defeats from the last six games the Blues have been struggling for form while PSG have won four, drawn one and lost one.

Betting Tip

Chelsea are at SBOTOP odds of 2.05 to win this tie, with PSG at 2.85 and the draw at 4.49. And that 3-0 home win which would keep the tie alive is priced at 17.00; or even 4-1 at 23.00 and 5-2 is at 62.00. I’ll be disappointed if we don’t see plenty of goals.
