Champions League: Paris is A Huge Test For Red Devils

Paris Saint-Germain vs Manchester United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer takes Manchester United to the Parc des Princes on Tuesday where they will come up against French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

This fixture, Champions League: PSG vs Manchester United, is the tie of the opening round in this year’s tournament. And it comes just seven weeks after Thomas Tuchel’s PSG lost the 2020 Champions League final in a tight contest against Bayern Munich. Manchester United haven’t been challenging for Europe’s biggest prize for longer than their fans care to remember, but this is a chance for them to recapture some former glories.

It’s going to be tough though, as the SBOTOP PSG vs Manchester United betting odds predict a difficult night for OGS’ inconsistent Red Devils when they come up against a team and a striker bang in form.

Talking Points

Mbappe is on fire

PSG star striker Kylian Mbappe was on target as France beat Croatia 2-1 in a UEFA Nations League tie last week, and then he scored twice as the French champions won 0-4 in Nimes to go top of Ligue 1. That takes his tally to four goals in Ligue 1 this season, at a rate of one per 86 minutes on the pitch, and he’s beginning to look unplayable, also providing three assists.

Italy international Alessandro Florenzi and Pablo Sarabia also hit the net against Nimes as the Parisians ran riot for the second match in succession. Before the international break they walloped Angers 6-1 as Mbappe and Florenzi both scored again while Neymar helped himself to a brace.

Manchester United suffered an identical fate to Angers in their last game before the break, but Tuchel won’t expect the Red Devils to capitulate quite as they did in a 6-1 thumping at the hands of Spurs. But if the Premier League club shows any of the defensive frailties exposed by Tottenham, then we could have another big score on our hands.

Has the Red Devils season started?

United come into this tie on the back of a boost as the beat Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United 1-4 and that was just the tonic they needed after their embarrassment against Spurs. But for much of the game it looked like being a frustrating evening in the North East for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team. Having gone behind to an early Luke Shaw own goal they equalised before time through centre back Harry Maguire. But the Geordies repelled the Red Devils until they launched an amazing last gasp assault on the Newcastle rearguard, sparked by a stunning Bruno Fernandes strike in the 86th minute. In a finish reminiscent of the days of ‘Fergie time’, United added two more goals in injury time, though they didn’t need them.

The win takes the Red Devils up to 14th in the league table and Solskjaer declared their season has officially started. Manchester fans will hope it doesn’t come to an abrupt halt in Paris on Tuesday night!

It will be interesting to see how Paul Pogba plays. He came on as a second half substitute against Newcastle but his club can’t seem to shake off the constant chatter around the enigmatic Frenchman’s future. He’s recently said he’d love to play for Real Madrid, and OGS tried to stop the rumour mill in his pre-match press interview on Saturday, saying: “Paul’s our player. He’s going to be here for another two years and I’m sure he’s focussed on doing his best for us.”

We’ll see soon enough.

History

These two European giants have met three times in recent years; the Parisians won the first two meetings before the Red Devils came up with a shock 1-3 victory in Paris in 2019. After losing the home Champions League Round of 16 leg at Old Trafford by 0-2, United stunned the French team thanks to a double strike from Romelu Lukaku and a 94th minute penalty converted by Marcus Rashford.

The Red Devils have some hope, coming into the game on a winning streak of four games away from Old Trafford, but PSG have just won their fifth consecutive match, scoring 16 goals.
