VfL Wolfsburg vs Union Berlin
Bundesliga is in full swing! The season is pretty young, and teams are climbing their way up the table.
The league has been action-packed and so far, as two teams currently have a slim lead at the top with nine points, but a handful of clubs are neck-and-neck in the middle of the table, as it usually goes during these early stages of the season.
Two of the said teams are facing off in the Volkswagen Arena this Saturday. Wolfsburg will be hosting Union in a matchup that could finally set one team apart from the other. Both sides have historically matched pretty evenly, splitting their wins three apiece since 2019.
Talking Points
Union’s spectacular start
Union Berlin have been hot off the gate this season. Despite losing their last game against RB Leipzig, Urs Fischer’s men are still riding a great wave of momentum and are looking to bounce back against Wolfsburg. It’ll be exciting to see how Union will handle the pressure and expectations after their blazing start to the season.
They started the Bundesliga campaign with back-to-back 4-1 wins against Mainz and Darmstadt. However, Union failed to find the back of the net against Leipzig and conceded three goals as well, handing them their first loss of the season and their first loss after 24 Bundesliga games at home.
Against Mainz, Union’s ace Kevin Behrens played a world-class level of football, scoring a hat-trick and giving his team a lopsided advantage right from the early stages of the game.
Behrens netted his first two goals in the very first minute and in the ninth minute of play in the first-half. He scored his third goal in the 70th minute of regulation in the form of a beautiful header.
His performance may be the best showing this season, and the barrage of goals he netted are surely some of the best Bundesliga 2023 highlightsso far. Behrens has scored four of Union’s eight total goals this season to date.
Koen Casteels’ last dance
With over 250 competitive matches in a Wolfsburg uniform, Koen Casteels will depart from Wolfsburg by the end of the season, a city he has called home for nine years. The former captain decided not to renew his contract, which officially ends at June 30, 2024.
Wolfsburg failed to qualify for Euros this term, so this means they can put all their focus and efforts on Bundesliga. What better way to cap off Casteels’ swan song than lifting the Meisterschale in Lower Saxony?
It seems that Wolfsburg want to make Casteels’ last season with the club count. They are currently sitting in the 7th spot at the Bundesliga table, and they’re off to a great start by winning two of their first three games this season.
Before losing to Hoffenheim 3-1, Wolfsburg were on a tear as they beat Heidenheim and Köln, respectively.
Jonas Wind was the trailblazer for the Wolves, scoring all of the club’s goals in their first two matches. Wind now has scored four of Wolfsburg’s five total goals this season so far. He now has a +1.2 finishing rate, which is in the top-10 within the category in the division.
History
These two sides have only previously met eight times in the Bundesliga since 2019 and once in the DFB-Pokal. Both teams have won three games, lost three, and tied three times. These clubs are not fond of each other to say the least.
In terms of recent performances, both Wolfsburg and Union have been in form so far this season. Both clubs are currently tied in the table with six points. The winner of this match will certainly have much needed momentum in a tight Bundesliga table right now.
Wolfsburg, so far, haven’t conceded a loss in any of their four home games against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga, so home field advantage may be come as a big factor in determining the match’s outcome.
Although, despite getting humbled by Leipzig in their previous match, Union Berlin are off to a great start this season, firing on all cylinders. It will be interesting to see who will get the upper hand between these equally matched teams.
Betting Tip
It will definitely be a close match. The SBOTOP Bundesliga 2023 odds have Berlin at 2.81, which is not that far off from where Wolfsburg is at.
Despite only having a narrow advantage, Wolfsburg’s form in Volkswagen Arena, especially versus Die Eisernen, is enough to expect a stellar performance from the boys in Lower Saxony.
