Bundesliga: Leipzig and Freiburg Out to Flex Their Top 3 Credentials

RB Leipzig vs SC Freiburg

Two of the top three teams in the Bundesliga standings are set for a fun matchup, as RB Leipzig host SC Freiburg at the Red Bull Arena on Saturday night.

RB Leipzig are currently second with 17 points, level with table leaders Bayern Munich, while SC Freiburg are right behind them in third with 15 points. We might see a new team on top of the pile, depending on this weekend’s set of Bundesliga 2024 results.

What makes this fixture entertaining is the fact that RB Leipzig and SC Freiburg have had their share of high-scoring affairs in their recent meetings, and SBOTOP football fans will hope that such a trend will continue this weekend.

Talking Points

Injury concerns for RB Leipzig

RB Leipzig’s game against SC Freiburg is their second tiff in four days, so Marco Rose will be forced to rotate his lineup. RB Leipzig will host Liverpool tomorrow in a high-profile clash in the Champions League.

RB Leipzig have a growing injury list, so this is a tricky period for Rose.

Top scorer Lois Openda limped off the pitch in their 2-0 win over Mainz last time out due to a knock, but the Belgian striker downplayed his issue after the game. If he’ll start against Liverpool, we won’t be surprised if he comes off the bench against SC Freiburg, or vice versa.

Yussuf Poulsen and Elif Elmas will get more playing time if this happens.

Amadou Haidara also suffered an injury scare during last weekend’s win, while Xaver Schlager (ACL), David Raum (ligament), Nicolas Selwald (groin), and Assan Ouedraogo (knee) are all facing spells on the sidelines due to injuries.

Benjamin Sesko and Xavi Simons will have to carry Die Roten Bullen either way. Sesko is the team’s top scorer with five goals in all competitions, including all three of their goals in the Champions League thus far.

SC Freiburg have an underrated frontline

SC Freiburg have had success this season because of Julian Schuster’s fresh tactics. Under his tutelage, the Black Forest are playing with a sense of freedom and ambition, leading them to score 12 goals after the first seven matchdays.

Their two biggest weapons are Ritsu Doan and Vincenzo Grifo, as both of them have three league goals each. And right behind them are Junior Adamu and Lukas Kubler, with two goals each.

Vincenzo Grifo is expected to play a vital role for SC Freiburg in their upcoming Bundesliga clash against RB Leipzig

Junior Adamu has been integral in the team’s refreshed attack in his second season. The 23-year-old speedster currently leads the league in intensive runs with 612, and it’s not a coincidence to see the Black Forest in the top two teams for distance covered after Matchday 7.

SC Freiburg’s backline should take plaudits too because they’ve only conceded eight goals so far. Matthias Ginter, Philipp Lienhart, Lukas Kubler, and Christian Gunter have formed a rock-solid four-man defence.

History

RB Leipzig have had SC Freiburg’s number, as they’re undefeated in their last 11 encounters (W7, D4). The last time SC Freiburg beat RB Leipzig was a 2-1 result five years ago, with Julian Nagelsmann still coaching the latter.

Die Roten Bullen are also undefeated in all nine of their competitive home matches against the Black Forest (W6, D3).

Marco Rose’s side is in the midst of their best-ever start to a Bundesliga campaign, with 17 points after the opening seven matches. RB Leipzig are undefeated through the first seven matchdays for just the second time after their maiden German top-flight season in 2016-17.

They are also unbeaten in 18 Bundesliga games in a row (W12, D6), extending their club record.

SC Freiburg have won five of their opening seven Bundesliga matches this season (D2), their highest win total at this juncture of a German top-flight campaign.

Betting Tip

The Bundesliga 2024 odds have RB Leipzig as the favourite to win on Saturday. Die Roten Bullen are priced at 1.63 to win, whereas the Black Forest are 4.52 underdogs, and a draw is at 3.76 in the 1X2 market.

As mentioned, these two teams have engaged in high-scoring affairs recently. So, other than going for an RB Leipzig victory, bettors may also go for alternatives like Over 2.50 at 1.65, Over 2.75 at 1.84, Over 3.00 at 2.11, Total Goals 2-3 at 2.05, or even Total Goals 4-6 at 2.80.

Furthermore, a rare goalless draw (Correct Score 0-0) could give you a huge payout of 15.00, while the Correct Scores of SC Freiburg winning will give you at least 15.50 your bet.
