Bundesliga: Key Fixtures Ahead of the 2024/25 Season

The start of top-flight club football looms around the corner as the Copa America and Euro 2024 draw to a close.

All of Europe’s top leagues will soon battle it out for another year and produce another intense and exciting season, with Germany’s Bundesliga starting its much-awaited Matchday 1 on 23 August.

As such, supporters will be ecstatic to see how their teams’ schedules play out.

If you are a huge SBOTOP Bundesliga fan, then I suggest you take note of these dates.

Der Klassiker (Matchday 12 and Matchday 29)

The most exciting and prestigious rivalry in German football comes back with a bang as Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have been announced to face each other on Matchdays 12 and 29, respectively.

Matchday 12 will be held on 29 November-1 December, whilst Matchday 29 is set to be contested from 11-13 April, 2025.

The two clubs split their season series last year.

Bayern won the first meeting with a resounding 4-0 result. Harry Kane was the Bavarians’ hero after he clinched a hat-trick for the match.

However, Dortmund came prepared in the reverse fixture, as Karim Adeyemi and Julian Ryerson both scored to give the Black and Yellow their first Der Klassiker win since 2018 and their first triumph at Bayern’s home in 10 years.

Both teams will also feature new coaches this season. After missing out on the Meisterschale for the first time in 11 years, Bayern Munich picked up former Manchester City centre-back Vincent Kompany to replace Thomas Tuchel.

Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand, appointed one of their former players, Nuri Sahin, to succeed Edin Terzic.

Bayern vs. Bayer (Matchday 5 and Matchday 22)

Everyone are chasing Xabi Alonso and his Bayer Leverkusen squad after a dominant season last year, which saw Die Werkself win the Bundesliga for the first time in history.

Ending the season unbeaten, numerous contenders will try their best to knock the reigning kings off their thrones. And if anyone are primed to end Bayer’s run, it’s best to rely on the most storied team in Bundesliga.

The pair will face each other on Matchday 5 (27-29 September) and Matchday 22 (14-16February, 2025).

Their meetings last season were filled with Bundesliga 2024 highlights: it was a 2-2 stalemate during the first encounter, which saw two late goals to even the score, whilst Bayer ran amok with a 3-0 win in the reverse fixture.

Dortmund vs. Leipzig (Matchday 9 and Matchday 26)

Whilst failing to win the title in recent years, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are never short on proving that they will always be a thorn in the side of Bayern Munich or whoever wins the title at any given year.

Dating back to 2015, Dortmund and Leipzig have shared the runners-up spot a combined seven times. A testament to their ambition and quality.

Leipzig was dominant against Dortmund last season, as they swept the two meetings against Die Borussen.

Their first match featured Dortmund defender Mats Hummels being shown the red card 15 minutes into the game. A Dortmund own goal was cancelled by Niklas Sule scoring right before the half-time whistle was blown.

Leipzig midfielder Christoph Baumgartner scored a sitter to make it 2-1 before Yussuf Poulsen left Nico Schlotterbeck in the dust to seal the victory.

The second match was a 4-1 blowout, where Jadon Sancho gave Dortmund the lead before things went out of hand and Leipzig blew their opponents out of the water.

Leipzig and Dortmund will square off on Matchday 9 (1-3 November) and Matchday 26 (14-16 March, 2025).

Bayer vs. M’Gladbach (Matchday 1 and Matchday 18)

The defending champions will kick-start the Bundesliga season against Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Foals finished last Bundesliga season 14th, their lowest finishing position as of late. Despite struggling all year round, Gladbach were the only team to prevent the undefeated champions from scoring during the entire 2023/24 season.

And whilst the then Bundesliga 2024 odds favoured Die Werkself from putting a horrible beating on the former German powerhouse, Gladbach held their own and did what no team could’ve done.

The opener will also be held on BORUSSIA-PARK, and with it being a Rhine Derby, Gladbach fans would surely make that place a fortress to help their team complete one of the biggest upsets on the very first day of the season.

They will meet again on Matchday 18 (17-19 January, 2025).
