Eintracht Frankfurt vs Borussia Dortmund
All roads lead to Frankfurt for the Bundesliga clash of the weekend as fourth meets fifth in a tantalising match, as Eintracht welcome Borussia Dortmund to the Commerzbank Arena.
The German league is the tightest in Europe in the early stages with just seven points separating Union Berlin in top spot from Cologne in 10th.
Between these two clubs sit the likes of Bayern Munich, TSG Hoffenheim, and slow starters RB Leipzig. And then Die Adler and Die Scwharzgelben are poised just four and three points behind the leaders.
Dortmund handed out a 5-0 thrashing to Stuttgart last week while Eintracht come into the game with back-to-back wins in the Bundesliga and it all adds up to a mouthwatering prospect with plenty at stake.
Eintracht’s aim is to secure a Champions League place, while BVB have their sights set a little higher and this is a game they must win if they are to keep pace with hot favourites Bayern who are currently second.
Talking Points
Kamada and Lindstrom are flying for Eagles
The Eagles’ Bundesliga 2022 results have certainly taken a turn for the better over the past week of so as head coach Oliver Glasner works to iron out early season inconsistencies. And the boss has two creative midfielders regularly doing the business for him.
My colleague’s preview of Eintracht’s recent clash with Borussia Monchengladbach predicted an entertaining 90 minutes, and so it was as the hosts took the game to Frankfurt and dominated possession throughout.
But the visitors were clinical in attack and went into a three-goal lead as Jesper Lundstrom scored a brace and young midfielder Eric Edimbe, on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, added a third.
The Eagles eventually won that game 3-1 and in their previous outcome – a 5-1 thrashing of Bayer Leverkusen in Frankfurt – Japanese attacking midfielder Daichi Kamada scored twice to take his tally to six goals for the campaign alongside Danish star Lundstrom, and Kamada has also made four assists.
BVB’s young guns are firing
Dortmund are at SBOTOP odds of 14.00 to win the 2022/23 Bundesliga and that puts them in second place and the most likely club to challenge the dominance of Bayern Munich. It’s a big responsibility which rests on a number of young shoulders, particularly in the absence of the injured Marco Reus.
In the rout against Stuttgart, young England star Jude Belllingham scored twice with a beautiful curled shot to complete his brace.
Bellingham is a real talent as a box-to-box midfielder and his creative instinct has been a big help for Dortmund’s latest wunderkind, 17-year-old striker Youssoufa Moukoko, who also scored against Stuttgart.
Moukoko already has four goals and three assists to his name and head coach Edin Terzic has also welcomed back 19-year-old Gio Reyna – who missed much of last season with injury.
With such a rich supply of young talent, it’s amazing to think of the players who have left Dortmund in recent years such as Christian Pulisic and Jadon Sancho. And
BVB old boy Erling Haaland was back at the Signal Iduna Stadium when Manchester City were in town for a Champions League clash on Tuesday night.
The Sky Blues missed a penalty, but Moukoko had a huge chance to make score in the first half as both teams qualified for the knockout phase following a 0-0 draw.
History
Dortmund have had the better of the head-to-heads, winning 28 of the 52 encounters with Frankfurt, while there have been 13 draws and 11 wins for the Eagles.
Last season, Die Schwarzgelben did a spectacular double over Eintracht with a 5-2 win in Dortmund and a 3-2 victory in Frankfurt as Bellingham scored a late headed equaliser and midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud bagged an injury-time winner.
In terms of recent form, there is little choose between the two teams. Eintracht have won three, drawn one, and lost two of the last six, while BVB have won two, drawn three, and lost one, though the Eagles have a Champions League clash against Marseilles on Wednesday night.
Betting Tip
Eintracht are at a price 2.89 to win this top-five battle, while the draw is at 3.21 and BVB are favourites at 2.28. The Bundesliga 2022 betting odds are backing Dortmund to give Bayern a run for their money this season. And while Terzic has a young team, they are playing without fear and the extra day to prepare gives them a useful edge over the Eagles.
