Bundesliga Wolfsburg vs Bayern Munich: Champions Sign Off in Style

VfL Wolfsburg 0-4 Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich are a club which likes to hammer home an advantage. They didn’t need to win in Wolfsburg, other than to complete a 100 per cent record since the league restarted.

In fact, in terms of meaning, this Bundesliga: Wolfsburg vs Bayern match was more important to the hosts, who were vying with Hoffenheim for a sixth-place finish. Their rivals pulled off a shock result in their season finale by beating Borussia Dortmund 0-4.

But Die Bayern did just what Die Bayern do; they hammered Wolfsburg by the same margin as they cantered to an eighth successive Bundesliga title.

Wolfsburg vs Bayern Munich results tend to go this way as Hansi Flick’s men helped themselves to a fifth consecutive victory over Die Wolfe.

Highlights of the game

Wolfsburg wanted to sign off with a win too, of course. They made a bright start when Jerome Roussillon hit a sweet shot from outside the box, and his effort flew narrowly wide.

But any brief hope the hosts had of taking a grip on the game disappeared with just four minutes gone. Thomas Muller found Kingsley Coman with a beautifully weighted through ball and the French winger did the rest, firing into the bottom corner to make it 0-1.

Muller’s 21 assists make him the biggest provider in the Bundesliga and he almost teed another up for the league’s top scorer, but Robert Lewandowski missed his chance.

Wolfsburg tried to fight back quickly. Wout Weghorst forced a save from Manuel Neuer. Josip Brekalo also stretched the Bayern keeper when he took a pass from Roussillon and fired a shot towards the top left corner, but the Bayern stopper made the save.

The 6ft 6in Weghorst came close with a towering header and when Daniel Ginczek met a Kevin Mbabu cross his effort flashed just wide.

But Bayern struck again to deliver a hammer blow to Die Wolfe’s momentum when Michael Cusiance beat Koen Casteels from outside the penalty area.

Undeterred, the hosts started the second half brightly. Max Arnold hit a beauty towards the top right corner but Neuer saved again.

Then, Serge Gnabry was almost a beneficiary of Muller’s assisting expertise when he picked up a pass on the right side of the box, but Casteels got down well to save in the bottom-right corner. Then Muller came close to scoring when Gnabry headed on a corner, but he stabbed his effort wide.

Daniel Ginczek forced another good save from Neuer, low to his left, but the pattern of the game continued as Bayern replied again, with a third goal.

It was a disastrous moment for Wolfsburg defender Joshua Guilavogui, who tripped Cuisance in the penalty area to give away a penalty and cop his second yellow card.

Lewandowski stepped up and the result was inevitable as he hammered home the spot-kick to make it 34 league goals for the season.

Bayern weren’t finished and Thomas Muller helped himself to a goal, beating Casteels with a well-placed left-foot shot.

0-4 to the champions, was it ever in doubt?

Key statistics

Die Wolfe have really struggled to find any consistent form at the Volkswagen Arena and the pre-match Wolfsburg vs Bayern Munich betting odds here at SBOBET pointed to a Bayern win at odds of 1.82, and the champions were ruthless.

It was a perfect away performance as Die Bayern dominated possession as well as winning the shot count by nine to four on target.

It’s a familiar story for Die Wolfe, who have lost their last five games against Bayern, scoring just twice while conceding 17.

What’s next?

Flick’s men have stormed to victory, winning an eighth consecutive Bundesliga in succession, by a huge 13 points. But they aren’t finished quite yet.

Bayern are back in action in the DFB Cup final against Bayer Leverkusen and their opponents will hope for a pick-up having just missed out on a Champions League spot, but I don’t expect Bayern to have any sympathy!

Then the champions have their eyes on a European Prize. They are one of the favourites to win the 2020 Champions League and have one foot in the quarter-finals with a 1st leg 3-0 lead over Chelsea.

Wolfsburg are still in this season’s Europa League but have work to do to overturn a 1-2 first-leg deficit in their Round of 16 tie against Shakhtar Donetsk.
