Bundesliga: Top 5 Games of the 2020/21 Season

The start of the 2021/22 Bundesliga season is just a few weeks away, with the huge clash between Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayern Munich set to kick off the new campaign.

That fixture proved to be one of the best matches of last season as it featured a stirring come-from-behind victory by the Foals.

Before they kick off the new season, join SBOTOP in looking back at that amazing battle as well as the rest of the top five games of the 2020/21 Bundesliga campaign.

5. Borussia Monchengladbach 3-2 Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich looked on course for a comfortable victory after taking a commanding 2-0 first-half lead away at Borussia Monchengladbach. Surely, the Foals couldn’t come back from such a deficit to beat the defending champions, right?

But lo and behold, Marco Rose’s men did. They came roaring back to tie it back up at 2-2, with Lars Stindl setting up Jonas Hofmann for two goals in the last 10 minutes of the first half. And they went on to take the lead four minutes after the break through Florian Neuhaus.

A shellshocked Bayern could not muster the strength to recover as they lost at Borussia Park for the second straight year.

4. Borussia Dortmund 3-2 RB Leipzig

Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig usually deliver highly entertaining goalfests whenever they meet in Dortmund. Each of their last three meetings at Signal Iduna Park had seen at least five goals, and their matchup in the 2020/21 season did not disappoint.

Despite missing Erling Haaland, Dortmund made a great start at home as they took the lead through Marco Reus on seven minutes. Jadon Sancho then doubled their lead six minutes into the second half.

But Julian Nagelsmann’s Red Bulls roared back as they tied it back up through goals from Lukas Klostermann and Dani Olmo.

It looked as if Leipzig had done enough to earn a point, but Sancho popped up with a late winner three minutes from time to break Red Bull hearts.

3. Eintracht Frankfurt 4-3 Wolfsburg

The Bundesliga 2021 odds did not expect either Eintracht Frankfurt or Wolfsburg to be flying as high as they were for most of last season. The two of them were in the Champions League places when they met for a highly anticipated top-4 showdown, which exceeded all expectations.

Both teams had already scored within the first eight minutes, with Frankfurt’s Daichi Kamada equalising after Ridle Baku gave Wolfsburg the early lead.

Luka Jovic gave the Eagles the lead near the half-hour mark, but it was the Wolves’ turn to equalise through Wout Weghorst one minute into the second half.

But Frankfurt eventually took firm control of the match with goals from Andre Silva and Erik Durm giving them a 4-2 lead.

The match was set for a grandstand finish after Tuta’s own-goal pulled Wolfsburg back to within a goal, but Frankfurt held on to win the seven-goal thriller.

2. Bayern Munich 3-3 RB Leipzig

Bayern Munich were already involved in two amazing matches against their main title rivals in their first 10 games of the season. The first one saw them come from behind to win Der Klassiker over Dortmund, 3-2. But their match against RB Leipzig a few weeks later would prove to be even better.

Again, Bayern went behind through a Christopher Nkunku goal. But they immediately bounced back with two quick goals from Jamal Musiala and Thomas Muller.

Justin Kluivert equalized for Leipzig just two minutes later, though, and Emil Forsberg gave the Red Bulls back the lead three minutes into the second half.

But the back-and-forth encounter eventually swung back to Bayern as Muller equalised 15 minutes from time to earn the Bavarians a point.

1. Bayern Munich 4-3 Hertha Berlin

Robert Lewandowski produced many Bundesliga 2021 highlights en route to his record-breaking 41 goals, and Bayern needed a handful of them in a brilliant performance to beat Hertha Berlin.

Lewandowski had given Bayern a 2-0 lead early in the second half, but Bayern somehow squandered the lead at home as Hertha scored through Jhon Cordoba and Matheus Cunha.

Lewandowski thought he’d given the hosts the win by completing his hat-trick on the 85th minute. However, Hertha equalised just two minutes later and looked ready to steal a point.

But Lewandowski just would not be denied. After Bayern won a late penalty, the Pole stepped up to the spot and scored his fourth goal of the game in stoppage time to give the Bavarians the dramatic victory.
