SC Paderborn vs Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund heads to Paderborn on Sunday, desperate to bounce back from the midweek disappointment of losing to league leaders Bayern.
That setback left Die Schwarzgelben with a huge uphill task to wrestle the title from the Bavarians while hosts SC Paderborn 07 are in a desperate relegation battle.
So Bundesliga: Paderborn vs Dortmund at the Benteler-Arena is a huge game for both teams, not exactly as the ‘last chance saloon’ but equally, not a million miles away.
Paderborn boss Steffen Baumgart has seen a recent improvement in his side but it could be too little too late, particularly if BVB take out their frustrations on the bottom club.
Talking Points
Dortmund must keep their eye on the ball
A defeat to FC Bayern this week dealt a heavy blow to BVB’s title hopes, leaving Lucien Favre’s team seven points behind the leaders with just six games remaining.
His side is packed with flair and talent, but Favre’s men have made a hash of two huge games recently. They played well enough against Die Bayern but fell foul to the one piece of real quality in the game from Joshua Kimmich, while fluffing their lines up front.
And before the break, Dortmund were dumped out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain. That left them with just the Bundesliga to focus on and things turned a little sour on Tuesday night.
But Favre must lift his men and they need to keep fighting until the end.
BVB are no stranger in recovering from setbacks, bouncing back after their two previous defeats, following up a 2-1 loss at Hoffenheim with a 5-3 win at Augsburg. Then in February, they responded to a 4-3 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen with a 4-0 hammering of Eintracht Frankfurt.
Favre will expect a similar response against the strugglers in Paderborn, but Die Bayern have a home game against Fortuna Dusseldorf on Saturday evening so the gap could have stretched to ten points by then.
BVB must keep their focus.
Draws are not enough for Paderborn
SC Paderborn’s season is also hanging by a thread as they sit marooned at the bottom of the table, eight points from the play-off place currently occupied by Fortuna Dusseldorf.
Since returning to action, Paderborn have battled hard for points with three consecutive draws, scoring and conceding just one goal.
They were always going to find life hard after winning promotion to the Bundesliga last season, and they have fought manfully but all too often come up short. Despite having 12 shots at goal in Augsburg on Wednesday, they had to settle for a goalless draw.
Strike pair Dennis Srbeny and Streli Mamba have five goals each while Kai Proger, who has six assists, provides the ammunition.
The steel comes from midfield man Klaus Gjasula who has racked up an astonishing 15 yellow cards. They have the second worst defensive record in the league and have only won twice at home this season, but the underdogs will not be afraid to mix it with the stars of Dortmund.
History
The head-to-head Paderborn vs Dortmund results tell a predictable story. Of the nine meetings between these two teams since 2006, Dortmund have won six and there have been three draws.
In November, Paderborn frustrated Dortmund at a packed Signal Iduna Park as Mamba scored twice to give the newcomers a shock 0-3 half time lead. But goals from Jadon Sancho, Axel Witsel, and an injury time equaliser from Marco Reus saved at least some of BVB’s blushes.
But Paderborn haven’t won in nine games or in their last five home games. So here at
SBOBET, we’re backing BVB to bounce back.
Let’s take a look at the best bets.
Betting Tip
SC Paderborn 07 vs Borussia Dortmund | Borussia Dortmund Asian Handicap -1.50 @ 1.98 | |
May 31, 00:00 (GMT+8) |
The pre-match Paderborn vs Dortmund betting odds have BVB at 1.36 to win and the draw at 4.70, with SC Paderborn at 8.00 to give their survival hopes a major boost.
But Paderborn are yet to win at home in 2020 and have only won at home twice all season. So to make it three against a wounded giant with the likes of Jadon Sancho, Thorgan Hazard, and the in-form striker Raphael Guerreiro in its armoury is a big ask.
The likely goal margin is two in favour of the visitors. The hosts are at odd of 1.92 with the +1.50 goal start, and for a correct score-line 0-2 is available at 7.80, while 1-2 is slightly shorter at 7.60.
BVB need a favour from Fortuna Dusseldorf while Paderborn will be cheering on Die Bayern on Saturday. But whatever the outcome in Munich, I expect Dortmund to boss this one.
