It has been a while since a club not named Bayern Munich won in the Bundesliga. The last time that this happened was in 2012 when the Jurgen Klopp-led Borussia Dortmund grabbed their fifth domestic title and they’ve been aching to get back there ever since.
Breaking Bayern Munich’s vice grip of the Bundesliga trophy is quite a daunting task to all other 17 German top-flight clubs. But as my SBOTOP colleague mentioned previously, if there’s a team that can do it, it is Borussia Dortmund.
BVB have come close so many times in recent years but they would always falter in the end. And as they’re approaching the 10th-year anniversary of their last championship, Borussia Dortmund are hoping to celebrate such with yet another silverware.
Newly-appointed manager Marco Rose will have his work cut out for him in trying to bring back the glory days at Signal Iduna Park. But can they defy the Bundesliga 2021 odds to finally topple the league juggernauts?
As shown by Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid last term, anything is possible in the game of football. So today, we list the three main reasons why Borussia Dortmund can end their Bundesliga drought.
Borussia Dortmund have an excellent development program
From Christian Pulisic, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Jadon Sancho, and even Robert Lewandowski, BVB has proven to be one of the best footballing programs in the world.
But while their acumen in creating stars is undeniable, their inability to keep them together is a whole another concern.
Team captain Marco Reus has seen it all playing for Borussia Dortmund. And while the turnover has been relatively constant, he still has a good enough supporting cast that can contend this season.
Borussia Dortmund are packed with talent with the likes of Thorgan Hazard, Thomas Meunier, Nico Schulz, Axel Witsel, Thomas Delaney, Mats Hummels, Manuel Akanji, Mahmoud Dahoud, and Raphael Guerreiro.
Other than those veterans, BVB have shiny young pieces in Gio Reyna, Jude Bellingham, and Youssoufa Moukoko – who all can contribute to the Bundesliga 2021 highlights reel.
Reyna, Bellingham, and Moukoko are all below 25 years old, and given how prolific they are already as of the moment, they are going to be scary to deal with in years to come.
These prodigious kids have showed up when they were called upon last season as Gio Reyna recorded four goals and six assists, while Jude Bellingham and Youssoufa Moukoko combined for five goals and four assists.
Given their oozing talent, many are going to watch these upstarts closely and for sure the big clubs will be chasing for their signatures soon enough.
Marco Rose’s resume is impressive
When Lucien Favre failed to bring enough positive results to Borussia Dortmund, changes were inevitable and they didn’t need to look far for his replacement.
Marco Rose was brought in to be a new voice at the Signal Iduna Park and the stage is set for the 44-year-old tactician to usher in a new era.
The German international has worked previously for Borussia Monchengladbach and he has earned the praise of many as the Foals were always in the Top 5 under his guidance.
Even with his departure at Borussia Park, Gladbach sporting director Max Eberl continues to heap praise for his former colleague, saying that his ambition is what will push BVB to the next level.
“He is a coach who can win trophies and titles and he has already proven that in Salzburg. He managed to make the Champions League with us, which is like a championship for us,” said Eberl.
“I believe that Marco can also lead a club to a Bundesliga championship,” he added.
On the other hand, Marco Rose has already worked with Erling Haaland before in RB Salzburg and both are excited to rekindle their partnership next season.
It’s Erling Haaland’s time to shine
Speaking of Erling Haaland, all eyes will be on the Norwegian sensation in the upcoming season.
Especially with Jadon Sancho moving on to Manchester United, a bigger responsibility awaits the 21-year-old and BVB will have to fend off every suitor for his services.
He registered 37 goals in all competitions last season and he’s touted at an exorbitant transfer fee of £150-M.
However, Haaland can’t do it all alone out front so Borussia Dortmund are keen on strengthening their attack.
One player that they’re keeping an eye out for is Donyell Malen from PSV. And according to reports, the 22-year-old is edging closer to moving to Signal Iduna Park.
With plenty of weapons at their arsenal, Borussia Dortmund are poised to push Bayern Munich to the limit. However, they’ll need some good fortune as well if they’ll be able to pull off the monumental upset.
