World Cup 2026: England Keen to Avoid Another Banana Peel Against Panama

Panama vs England

England can clinch the top spot in Group L for a more favourable matchup in the World Cup 2026 Round of 32 when they face Panama at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Saturday. Thomas Tuchel’s men have four points after the first two matchdays, level with Ghana and one point ahead of Croatia.

After winning 4-2 against Croatia in the opener, England were held to a goalless draw by Ghana, sparking criticism from their fans back home. Because they’re fresh from a lacklustre performance, the Three Lions will be motivated to vent their ire against poor Los Canaleros.

Panama are already out of this year’s finals after back-to-back defeats against Ghana (1-0) and Croatia (1-0). With this being their last match, Thomas Christiansen’s group will aim to end their campaign on a positive note.

Talking Points

Panama plan to salvage some pride

Panama entered this year’s finals as one of the underdogs, but unfortunately for them, they couldn’t replicate what Cape Verde and South Africa did. For the most part, Los Canaleros stood their ground on the defensive end before conceding second-half goals from Ghana and Croatia.

Thomas Christiansen’s side was on the brink of securing their first point of this year’s World Cup when they dominated possession and created more chances against Ghana. However, they weren’t clinical enough in the final third, and they paid the price by conceding a gut-wrenching stoppage-time goal. Against Croatia, Panama also did well in the first half, but substitute Ante Budimir struck nine minutes after halftime.

Given they’re the underdogs against England, Panama could change from 3-4-3 to a 5-4-1 shape for a potential smash-and-grab. However, Christiansen has yet to figure out who will lead up front, as he has gone with two different frontlines in their opening two games.

This means that Orlando Mosquera could be in for a long day against the Three Lions. The Al-Fayha goalkeeper has been one of their steadier players so far this tournament.

Lineup questions for England

Thomas Tuchel has drawn criticism for England’s goalless draw against Ghana, as it was a winnable match. Their 19 shots were their most without scoring in a World Cup match since their final group-stage against Nigeria in 2002 (25).

Therefore, we expect changes in the starting XI against Panama, as England should deploy a more attack-heavy lineup. Noni Madueke could be relegated to the bench in favour of Bukayo Saka or Marcus Rashford, while Nico O’Reilly could replace Djed Spence as one of the full-backs. One can also argue that Kobbie Mainoo should replace either Elliot Anderson or Declan Rice in their double-pivot setup.

Meanwhile, Marc Guehi’s spot is safe, who came in to replace John Stones, as the Manchester City centre-back won seven fouls, the joint-most by a defender on record (since 1966) in a World Cup contest.

History

Saturday marks only the second competitive meeting between Panama and England. The Three Lions pummeled Los Canaleros with a 6-1 scoreline in a World Cup group stage fixture in June 2018, as Harry Kane recorded a hat-trick, John Stones registered a brace, and Jesse Lingard scored one goal. England finished second behind Belgium in Group G and lost to Croatia in the semi-finals, and finished fourth in the tournament.

England’s recent form is considerably stronger than Panama’s, having won three of their last five matches across all competitions (D1, L1). Panama head into this game having won only one game during this stretch (D1, L3).

Panama are playing their second World Cup in the past three editions, and they are on the brink of leaving the tournament without a point yet again.

Betting Tip

The World Cup 2026 odds expect nothing less than a comfortable victory for the Three Lions on Saturday. England are 1.17 favourites to get maximum points, whereas Panama are massive 13.00 underdogs, and a draw is pegged at 7.60 in the 1X2 market.

While England have the requisite firepower to dispatch Panama, they shouldn’t play their food as they did against Ghana. If head coach Thomas Tuchel gets his boys’ act together, for sure, we’ll be treated to numerous World Cup 2026 highlights.

With that said, punters may also add Over 3.00 at 1.67, Over 3.25 at 1.95, Over 3.50 at 2.16, and Total Goal 4-6 at 2.36 to the parlay alongside our recommended bet. Moreover, any scoreline that has Panama getting a point is on offer for at least 14.50 your bet.
