Argentina vs Honduras
Argentina will play two International Friendly matches to gear up for their World Cup 2026 campaign, as they seek to become only the third side in history to retain their crown after winning in Qatar in the previous edition. First, they play Honduras at Kyle Field in Texas on Saturday night. After that, they’ll take on Iceland on Tuesday evening before opening their Group J run against Algeria a week later.
Like the other tournament favourites, head coach Lionel Scaloni will use this time to explore lineups and tactics that could help them, so some of their newer players could get more playing time. Ramping up their conditioning is also key to their World Cup hopes.
Meanwhile, Honduras will have to watch the quadrennial tournament at home after missing out in the CONCACAF qualifiers. Right now, their focus is to build on what they have under head coach Jose Francisco Molina.
Talking Points
Load management for Argentina’s stars
Argentina will be extra careful with Lionel Messi this time, as the Inter Miami star is approaching his 40s. Fighting back from muscle fatigue, the 38-year-old talisman has not taken part in full training so far in La Albiceleste’s pre-World Cup camp.
Messi was the headline act for Argentina during their qualification campaign, as he led the team in goals (eight) and assists (three). He also scored the first goal in his previous national team appearance – a 5-0 rout of Zambia last April.

Gonzalo Montiel (muscle) and Emiliano Martinez (finger) are also expected to take the day off against Honduras. Julian Alvarez is supposed to be available to take Messi’s spot in the starting XI, but the Barcelona target has not yet fully recovered from his ankle problem. Leandro Paredes and Nico Paz are also reportedly unavailable.
Their absences would mean more opportunities for Geronimo Rulli (or Juan Musso), Nahuel Molina, and Giuliano Simeone, while Lautaro Martinez will lead the way up front. Martinez was the central figure in Inter Milan’s successful Serie A title run, leading the Nerazzurri in scoring with 17 goals and six assists, and he’s expected to contend for the World Cup Golden Boot.
Honduras’ stars eager to impress
Honduras were one of the saddest stories in the World Cup qualifiers, as they missed out on progression by the narrowest of margins. If only they had beaten Haiti last November, La Bicolor wouldn’t have missed out on the inter-confederation playoffs on goal difference. Since then, Honduras replaced Reinaldo Rueda with Jose Francisco Molina, and the former Mohun Bagan boss will use this international break to showcase some of his promising players.
Austin FC defender Joseph Rosales will certainly enjoy familiar surroundings in Texas this weekend, while Liverpool youngster Keyrol Figueroa will link up with Luis Palma in the final third. Palma was a standout in CONCACAF qualifying, having provided six assists for La Bicolor. The 26-year-old recently secured a permanent move to Polish side Lech Poznan from Celtic.
History
Saturday marks only the fourth competitive meeting between Argentina and Honduras, with the former winning all three. These two nations last met in a friendly in September 2022, where La Albiceleste scored three unanswered goals.
Argentina are on a five-game winning streak in friendlies, having conceded only one goal. However, it must be noted that most of those games were against relative minnows. During the CONMEBOL qualifiers, La Albiceleste were hardly untouchable, losing four of their 18 matches, but they still finished nine points ahead of second-seeded Ecuador in the standings.
While defending champions Argentina have been World Cup regulars, the same can’t be said for Honduras, who have only qualified three times in their history. Their last appearance in the quadrennial tournament was in 2014, where they finished scoreless in Group E.
