International Friendly: Portugal Can Fine-Tune Their Firepower Against Chile

Portugal vs Chile

Portugal will play two International Friendly matches before they open their World Cup 2026 campaign against DR Congo two weeks from now. First, they will host Chile at Estadio Nacional on Saturday before facing Nigeria next Wednesday evening.

Head coach Roberto Martinez will use these two exhibition games to prepare his tactics and build his boys’ fitness for the quadrennial tournament. However, he is not expected to deploy his best squad against two teams that will miss out on the World Cup, which means new opportunities for some of their newer players to leave a lasting impression.

On the other hand, Chile are building for the future after finishing dead last in the World Cup 2026 CONMEBOL qualifiers. Because of the embarrassing outcome, La Roja have replaced Ricardo Gareca with Nicolas Cordova on an interim basis.

This is a measuring-stick game for Chile, so they’re expected to take this seriously, probably more than Portugal.

Talking Points

Portugal without their PSG contingent

Head coach Roberto Martinez will tweak his starting lineup against Chile, as he’ll be without his renowned PSG contingent until after this weekend. Joao Neves, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Goncalo Ramos were ruled out this Saturday to recharge their batteries after a grueling yet successful Champions League defence last week.

Their absences would mean more playing time for Samu Costa, Ruben Neves, and Goncalo Inacio, who will link up with Ruben Dias at centre-half. Diogo Dalot and Joao Cancelo will likely be the starting full-backs in their back four setup. Costa and Neves will look to stabilise the base of midfield, with Bruno Fernandes as the No. 10. Fernandes is fresh from breaking the Premier League’s assist record and will be tasked with supplying the forward line.

Bernardo Silva will likely start on the right wing, and Rafael Leao is on the left flank. Cristiano Ronaldo will be the starting No. 9, and the 41-year-old striker is coming off a productive campaign with Al-Nassr, having led them to the Saudi Pro League championship.

During the previous international break, Portugal secured a 2-0 win against the United States. This meant that the Selecao have only lost one of their last 11 outings.

Chile build for the future

Chile’s failure to secure a World Cup spot reinforces its need to rebuild, and interim head coach Nicolas Cordova is doing just that upon his appointment. Some of the roster omissions this international break include Arturo Vidal, Charles Aranguiz, Ben Brereton Diaz, and Alexis Sanchez.

La Roja supporters will be keen to watch Gonzalo Tapia’s development in the next few months, as the Sao Paulo forward is likely to lead the line for the foreseeable future. On Saturday, Tapia will likely be flanked by Maximiliano Gutierrez and Matias Sepulveda.

Meanwhile, Lawrence Vigouroux, Guillermo Maripan, and Francisco Sierralta face the unenviable task of keeping Portugal’s attack at bay.

History

Since taking over the Portuguese national team, Roberto Martinez has notched a robust winning rate of 68-per cent (W26, D7, L5), which includes an almost perfect six wins from their last seven home games (D1). He also led Portugal to their first major trophy in a while, having won the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League after beating Spain in the final (via penalties).

After consecutive runs to the Round of 16 in the 2010 and 2014 World Cups with their “golden generation,” Chile failed to qualify for the quadrennial competition for a third straight time. Under interim head coach Nicolas Cordova, La Roja have accumulated four wins from his seven matches in charge (D1, L2).

These two teams last squared off during the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, where Chile won on penalties after being goalless with Portugal in regulation.

Betting Tip

Portugal are expected to cruise past Chile at home this Saturday, even if they don’t deploy their A team. According to the International Friendly 2026 odds, the Selecao are 1.20 favourites to win, whereas Chile are huge 8.20 underdogs, and a draw is valued at 5.30 in the 1X2 market.

It would be a surprise to see anything other than a win for the hosts, who will be hoping to lay a strong foundation ahead of their World Cup opener. Both teams can produce International Friendly 2026 highlights this weekend, with Portugal likely to score more goals.

SBOTOP punters may also add Over 3.25 at 1.98 and Total Goal 4-6 at 2.43 to the parlay. Furthermore, a Correct Score of 0-0 after 90 minutes – the result of their previous encounter – would yield a staggering 22.00 payout, though it is highly unlikely to happen.
