The Bundesliga title race may have long been over – and the Bundesliga 2026 betting odds are pretty fixed on who will go down too – but, even with five league matches remaining, there were no shortage of talking points over the weekend.
The Bundesliga 2026 highlights began on Friday evening when Hoffenheim’s bid to reach the Champions League – which would be a superb achievement – for just the second time in their history gathered pace.
Their 2-2 draw at Augsburg showed real character and perhaps a touch of good fortune as they fought back from 2-0 down and survived a late penalty miss from the hosts to stay in contention.
It was Alexis Claude-Maurice who opened the scoring but missed that late spot-kick to cap a special night for Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann, who made his 518th Bundesliga appearance at the WWK Arena, moving him into the top 10 of the division’s all-time appearance-makers.
The big game of the weekend was the meeting of the bridesmaids as Borussia Dortmund hosted Bayer Leverkusen.
The Black and Yellows had the chance to secure Champions League football for next season following Hoffenheim’s failure to collect all three points the previous evening, while the visitors were desperate to maintain their own top-four ambitions.
Dortmund entered the clash as the Bundesliga’s form team with four consecutive victories and just two defeats all season – both against Bayern Munich.
But Leverkusen had other ideas and a spectacular strike from Robert Andrich proved decisive and moved the 2024 German champions back into fifth place.
Heidenheim might be all but down but they still have a glimmer after running out 3-1 home winners over Union Berlin, especially with Wolfsburg and St Pauli, the sides directly above them, both losing on Saturday.
Mathias Honsak’s first-half double set them on their way to possibly reignite their extremely faint survival hopes. This result, coupled with previous draws against Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach, suggests they haven’t given up hope.
Berlin certainly have with Steffen Baumgart who was relieved of his duties shortly after the match with Marie-Louise Eta appointed as interim coach for the rest of the season. Eta, who has coached the club’s under 19 side, will now make history as the first female head coach in the German top flight.
As Eta prepares to lead her side out at home to Wolfsburg next weekend, she is far from the only history maker to write home about.

That’s because runaway leaders and champions elect Bayern Munich clocked up another milestone.
On Saturday, they crushed lowly St. Pauli to set an all-time season scoring record, while also extending their lead at the top to 12 points with five games left to play.
The Bavarian club, this SBOTOP tipster’s choice to win the Champions League this term, host Real Madrid in their quarter-final second leg in midweek after a 2-1 win in Spain. Domestically though, they are now within touching distance of the league title on 76 points.
A ninth-minute header from Jamal Musiala put the visitors equal with the record of 101 goals in one season, set by Bayern in the 1971-72 campaign. They then added two more in quick succession early in the second half through Leon Goretzka and Michael Olise to beat the previous best mark and make sure of the three points.
Nicolas Jackson added a fourth before Raphaël Guerreiro slotted in to make it 5-0, with coach Vincent Kompany having rested several players, including Harry Kane.
Bayern are still in the running for three titles and face Leverkusen in the German Cup semi-final on April 22.
