Champions League: PSG Could Give Liverpool More Blues in Paris

PSG vs Liverpool

Liverpool will face a blue team for the third consecutive match, as they’ll visit PSG at Parc des Princes for the opening leg of their Champions League quarter-finals tie on Wednesday night, and the Reds are praying for a different result this time.

Arne Slot’s men are currently bereft of confidence as they felt the blues against Brighton and Manchester City, with the latter humiliating them in the FA Cup quarter-finals last time out. Barring any miracles, Liverpool are unlikely to bring home a piece of silverware this term.

In stark contrast, PSG enter this game in high spirits. They’re on a four-game winning streak across all competitions since their 3-1 Ligue 1 loss to AS Monaco last month, and a treble is still in the cards for Luis Enrique’s men.

Talking Points

PSG catching fire in the final third

PSG strengthened their grip on Ligue 1’s top seed with back-to-back blowout victories against Nice (4-0) and Toulouse (3-1), opening a four-point cushion at the summit. In the process, the Parisiens have their eyes set on dumping another Premier League side out of the Champions League after they demolished Chelsea 8-2 on aggregate in the Round of 16.

During their winning run, they’ve scored 15 goals while conceding only three on the other end. 10 of their key players were on the scoresheet, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembele contributing three goals each and Bradley Barcola having two goals. Vitinha, Senny Mayulu, Nuno Mendes, Desire Doue, Pedro Fernandez, Goncalo Ramos, and Warren Zaire-Emery have one apiece.

The Parisiens will likely be without Bradley Barcola (ankle), Fabian Ruiz (knee), and Quentin Ndjantou in the first leg, but they should have enough firepower to see this through. Mayulu – one of the scorers against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge – is expected to return from a calf injury. Vitinha, Joao Neves, and Nuno Mendes are certain to return to the starting XI on Wednesday after coming off the bench against Toulouse.

Liverpool lose key veteran

Virgil van Dijk slammed his team’s effort at the Etihad last Saturday, having admitted that they gave up against Manchester City. It was their second consecutive game without Alisson, who is expected to be out on the opening leg against PSG due to injury.

Losing their first-choice goalie hasn’t gone well for the Reds this season. In their 15 losses thus far, 10 of those have come when Alisson hasn’t played, a damning reflection of the Brazilian’s importance to the rotation. Head coach Arne Slot has no choice but to continue to roll with Giorgi Mamardashvili, who has yet to convince during Alisson’s absence.

If there’s any consolation for Liverpool, it’s that their injury list has somewhat eased up, with Jeremie Frimpong and Alexander Isak upgraded to questionable against PSG on Wednesday.

History

PSG and Liverpool have had their battles in the Champions League in the past few years. They first met in Europe’s showpiece event in the 2018-19 group stage, where both sides split their encounters, with Liverpool winning 3-2 in the first and PSG winning 2-1 in the second.

A few years later, these two clubs crossed paths in the 2024-25 Round of 16. Liverpool won 1-0 at Parc des Princes in the opening leg before losing the tie to penalties in the return leg at Anfield. PSG eventually went all the way to win their maiden Champions League trophy.

PSG are undefeated in their last seven Champions League knockout games (W6, D1), one shy of the record for a French side. However, defending champions have exited the quarter-final stage in four of the last five editions.

Betting Tip

The Champions League 2026 odds have PSG as the favourites to win the opening leg of their quarter-finals tie with Liverpool on Wednesday. The Parisiens are 1.73 favourites, while the Reds are 3.86 underdogs, and a draw is at 3.76 in the 1X2 market.

PSG have been scoring goals for fun lately, so they’re expected to be a huge part of this week’s Champions League 2026 highlights reel at the expense of their Premier League visitors. Besides going for a PSG victory, punters may be tempted to add Over 3.00 at 1.81, Over 3.25 at 2.04, Over 3.50 at 2.31, and even Total Goal 4-6 at 2.52 to the parlay.

Meanwhile, a Correct Score of 1-0 in favour of the Parisiens – the result of their most recent encounter (after 90 minutes) – could yield a tidy payout of 10.00 your bet.
