World Cup 2026: Türkiye Are Ready to Rumble with Romania

Türkiye vs Romania

World Cup 2026 football comes to the Tupras Stadium in Istanbul on Thursday; and the home of Besiktas will be rammed to the rafters with 40,000 passionate fans, ready to roar their team on to victory.

World Cup: Türkiye vs Romania is the Pathway C clash and the SBOTOP pick in a group which also contains Slovakia and Kosovo, and it is the Turks who are the men to beat, an upwardly mobile football nation which boasts the talents of young guns Arda Guler and Kenan Yildiz, playing their football at Real Madrid and Juventus.

Placed 25th in the FIFA World Rankings, the hosts are 24 positions above 49th placed Romania and the Türkiye vs Romania 2026 betting odds say they will make that superiority clear when they meet in Istanbul on Thursday.

Talking Points

Türkiye

Drawn against European Champions Spain in qualifying Group E, the Turks performed admirably, winning four, drawing one and losing one match to finish on 13 points, and just three behind La Roja. In a well travelled career head coach Vincenzo Montella has managed AC Milan, Fiorentina and Sevilla and he has been the Türkiye boss since 2023, overseeing the start of what could be a golden era for the nation. He led his men to the 2024 European Championships where they beat Georgia, the Czech Republic and Austria on the way to a quarter final against the Netherlands which they lost by the odd goal in three.

Türkiye have continued to progress in 2025, pushing Spain all the way in the qualifiers, and they are the favourites to make it through Pathway C to the showcase finals in North America in June.

Player to Watch

While Guler and Yildiz are the future of Turkish football, Inter Milan star Hakan Calhanoglu has been the face of the nation’s team for the past decade and is Montella’s natural choice as captain. Traditionally an attacking midfielder with a set piece specialism, the 32 year old has scored 22 goals in 102 internationals. His powerful shot and ability to bend the ball means he scores his fair share of the spectacular goals but, while he has played in offensive roles for much of his career Calhanoglu has increasingly been used as a holding midfielder.

Romania

Romania finished in third place in qualifying Group H, ending up behind Austria and Bosnia and Herzegovina, winning four, drawing one and losing three of their group games; and so they have a difficult task ahead of them when they meet Türkiye away from home on Thursday. Head coach Mircea Lucescu took over the Tricolorii in 2024, 38 years after his first tenure, and he started with a 3-0 win over Kosovo. Lucescu then led his team to the top of their Nations League group to win promotion to League B, but they struggled in World Cup competition, losing twice to Bosnia and drawing with the minnows of Cyprus.

Player to Watch: Radu Dragusin

Can Radu Drăgușin step up in the upcoming World Cup 2026 qualifier between Türkiye and Romania?
Radu Drăgușin and manager Mircea Lucescu during Romania’s Nations League match against Cyprus in November 2024

Tottenham Hotspur defender Radu Dragusin will be a busy man in Istanbul. The 24 year old defender can play as a centre back or a right back and he will have his work cut out against the fleet of foot Yildiz. A tall and powerful figure, Dragusin is confident in possession, tough in the tackle and he has superb positional sense and, if he is on his game, he can inspire his co-defenders to a potential shut-out. Since his £25m transfer, a fee which made his the most expensive Romanian player in history, his form for Spurs has been patchy, but the Londoners have been awful for much of the season and are in a relegation battle which falls at all the players’ feet.

Dragusin will be glad to pull on the Romanian shirt again this week.

History

These two nations have met five times before and Romania have won three to Türkiye’s two, while in Türkiye the score is 1-1, and this is the first meeting since 2017 when Romania won a friendly 2-0.

But while the visitors have edged the head to head Türkiye vs Romania 2026 results the hosts have been stronger over the past 12 months.

Türkiye have won seven, drawn one and lost two of their ten games in 2025 while Romania won five , drew one and lost three last year.

Betting Tip

The hosts are hot favourites at a price of 1.55 to win this clash with the Draw at 4.33 and a Romania win at 6.45; and I see no other outcome than a home victory. In terms of a correct score line, a 2-0 home win is the most likely outcome at odds of 6.50.
