Bundesliga Matters… at the Top and Bottom

After another superb Saturday in the German top flight, Bayern Munich are nearing a 35th Bundesliga title as they remain nine points clear with just seven matches remaining.

The SBOTOP Bundesliga 2026 betting odds have all but handed the title to the Bavarians and it would take a monumental collapse from Vincent Kompany’s men to let Borussia Dortmund in. But Niko Kovac’s team battled hard to get a win too this weekend and they haven’t gone away just yet.

Meanwhile there are fierce battles raging in the race for the top four and the scuffle to avoid the drop, with the big players all in action on Saturday too.

League leaders Bayern Munich briefly went 12 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table thanks to a 4-0 victory over FC Union Berlin. Kompany was forced to make some changes, with Luis Diaz and Nicolas Jackson suspended, and Jamal Musiala and Jonathan Tah still sidelined.

But the result was the same as Die Bayern swept aside the Berliners with two goals from Serge Gnabry, and one each for Harry Kane and Michael Olise as they march on towards the title. And, having just whacked ten goals past Atalanta in the Champions League they are going well in Europe too.

Borussia Dortmund hosted Hamburg later on Saturday and they looked dead and buried at half-time, trailing their visitors 2-0. Die Schwarzgelben have only been beaten twice this season, both defeats at the hands of Bayern Munich, but strikes from Philip Otele, with his first Bundesliga goal, and Albert Sambi Lokonga rocked the hosts and briefly silenced the Yellow Wall.

But Kovac made two superb substitutions at the break, bringing on Ramy Bensebaini and Serhou Guirassy and BVB roared back. After Max Beier had been fouled Bensebaini halved the deficit on 73 minutes and Guirassy levelled five minutes later to set up a grandstand finish. And there was late drama when Miro Muheim handled and Bensebaini remained the calmest man in the house as he slotted home from 12 yards for the second time.

Red Bulls storm into top three

Fifth placed RB Leipzig were at home to TSG Hoffenheim on Friday night and they made a huge statement, climbing up to third with a statement 5-0 win. Brajan Gruda opened the scoring on 17 minutes, and Christoph Baumgartner headed the second before completing his brace on the half hour, and Gruda grabbed his second as the brutal Bulls took a 4-0 lead into the break. Benjamin Henrichs finished proceedings in the second half to hand Hoffenheim their biggest defeat of the season and put Red Bull in a strong position to make a return to Champions League football.

In other Bundesliga 2026 news sixth placed Leverkusen surrendered a 2-0 lead away to bottom club FC Heidenheim. The hosts were winless in 13 matches and ten points adrift of safety, and it was no surprise that Malik Tilman and Patrik Schick gave Die Werkself a first half lead. But the strugglers fought back and halved the deficit when a cross shot from Hennes Behrens found the net and Marvin Pieringer stunned the visitors when he levelled. Schick restored Leverkusen’s lead but drama wasn’t over, and it was Pieringer again who gave the Heidenheim fans a rare treat with a 3-3 draw.

Wolves wounded by the boys from Bremen

Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen were in a relegation battle on Saturday, starting 17th and 15th and the Wolves stayed exactly where they were, falling to a miserable 1-0 loss. After a cagey first half in which Bremen contained their hosts and played on the break, the game was goalless at half time. But as the Wolves strained for a winner in the second period they were mortally wounded when Justin Njinmah broke the deadlock to lift Werder up to 13th and leave Wolfsburg deep in the mire.

Meanwhile FC Koln hosted Monchengladbach as both clubs tried to claw their way away from the bottom three but they could only collect a point each as they played out a 3-3 draw. This was a Rhineland Derby to savour, the 100th in history, as the goals flooded in, Jens Castrop opening the floodgates when he gave the Foals a lead with just 30 seconds on the clock. In a breathless opening period, Koln turned the game on its head to make it 2-1 on seven minutes, through Said Le Mala and Ragnar Ache, and to send the frenzied 50,000 crowd into raptures.

Monchengladbach were level when the excellent Castrop teed up Philip Sander, and they went ahead again when Castrop unleashed a rocket which flew into the net off the underside of the crossbar. But Eric Martel gave Koln a dramatic leveller when he headed home on 84 minutes, only to be sent off two minutes later when he collected a second yellow card.
