FIBA World Cup: A Round-up of Tournament Victors

The 2023 FIBA World Cup has come to an unprecedented end. Fans around the world were blessed with the best national teams around the globe gutting it out in the highest showcase of what international basketball has to offer. Here’s the round-up of the tournament winners courtesy of SBOTOP.


Germany vs Serbia Final

A motivated Germany squad came from behind to clinch their first ever FIBA World Cup championship against the spirited Serbian team. The two nations played an inspiring game of basketball in the SM Mall of Asia Arena last September 10, 2023.

The Germans who are first time finalists and the undermanned Serbian squad were neck and neck by the end of the first half being tied 47-47. The Serbian swingman set the tempo for the team from start to finish alongside Aleksa Avramović who put up a team high 21 points to help carry the load offensively.

Dennis Schroder unleashed an offensive masterclass finishing with 28 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists. The German floor general averaged 19.1 points, 2 rebounds, and 6.1 assists throughout the tournament and was named the FIBA World cup Most Valuable Player.


Battle for Bronze

Team USA and Team Canada played a thriller of a game for the final podium spot. The match was tied at 111-111 by the end of the fourth quarter, but Canada blazed their way and finished strong in overtime defeating the Americans 127-118 giving Canada their first FIBA World Cup medal.

The USA squad had no answer for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks, who combined scored 70 points for Canada. Known for his rowdy machismo on the court, Dillon Brooks posted a monster game filling the stat sheet with 39 points, 4, rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks, with 7/8 three points made. Shai had a dominating outing as well with 31 points, 12 assists, 6 rebounds, shooting an efficient 55% from the field. Team USA’s young stars showed promise ramping their game up after a slow start. Shooting guard Anthony Edwards balled out finishing with a team high 24 points, while the Lakers’ young gun Austin Reaves put up 23 points in 33 minutes on the floor.


Special Awards

The FIBA World Cup champion Dennis Schroder was named the MVP of the tournament but a lot of other players shined in the international stage as well. Pleasantly, all five players of the All-Star Five of the FIBA World Cup hail from different nations.

Obviously, first name to pop up is Germany’s leader Dennis Schroder. Second is Canada’s prominent young star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander who averaged 24.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 6.4 assists. Shai lead Canada to their first FIBA World Cup hardware in the nation’s history.

Third is USA’s top gun Anthony Edwards, who had a stellar tournament posting 18.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists. The USA squad had an evidently young core but Edwards played way beyond his years.

Fourth on the list is Serbia’s marksman Bogdan Bogdanovic averaging a cool 19 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. Bogdan was efficient on both ends of the floor also averaging 2.1 steals and only 1.5 turnovers a game. Through their surgical European style of basketball and Bogdan’s leadership, Serbia still managed to snag silver.

The last player to complete the All-Star Five is none other than Slovenia’s golden boy Luka Doncic. Luka Magic averaged 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 10 assists throughout the tournament. Even though Slovenia only finished seventh in the tournament, Luka’s individual stats are still a marvel.

The first ever Wanda Rising Star award was given to Australia’s 20-year-old Josh Giddey. Giddey showed an impressive FIBA World Cup campaign averaging 19.4 points, 6.0 assists and 5 rebounds per game. Australia finished tenth in the final standings.

Luca Banchi was given The Best Coach honours after spearheading a dream run for Latvia’s fifth place finish in their FIBA World Cup debut.

Canada’s Dillon Brooks was named The Best Defensive player of the tournament. Brooks took on colossal defensive assignments guarding the best player of the opposing team almost every game. He is the anchor of their defence and played a pivotal role on both ends of the floor to give Canada the bronze medal.

Lastly, the All-Second Team honours were given to Latvia’s Arturs Zagars, Italy’s Simone Fontecchio, Lithuania’s big man Jonas Valanciunas, Serbia’s serviceable Nikola Milutinov, and Germany’s Franz Wagner.
