Euro 2020: France and Germany Are Ready to Rumble

France vs Germany

Euro 2020 has gotten off to a dramatic start with Belgium and Italy both putting down markers. England are due to play on Sunday and, on Tuesday, we have a Clash of the Titans when France take on Germany.

Here at SBOTOP, we’re predicting more joy for Les Bleus and some despair for Germany but it’s going to be a close call in Group F. Didier Deschamps’ world champions are the favourites to top the group at odds of 2.30, with Joachim Low’s Germany at 2.40 and Portugal at longer odds of 4.30.

But the reigning champions have a team containing Cristiano Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva and Joao Felix among many other top talents, and the Selecao are surely a huge threat. When they open their account against Hungary on Tuesday, they will expect a winning start.

So this is a huge match in Munich, and one which could give us a big clue about what we can expect from these two great nations at Euro 2020.

Talking Points

France expect…

According to the pre-tournament Euro 2020 betting odds, Les Bleus are the team to beat, though Italy put down a marker in the opening match of the competition with an impressive 3-0 victory over Turkey.

Deschamps knows that as tournament favourites, at odds of 5.50, there is a huge weight of expectation on his team. This is some group, though, containing the champions of the last three major world tournaments, and Les Blues will have to be at their best to come out on top.

France have won their last four games, scoring nine unanswered goals and are unbeaten in seven. They have been in imperious form on their two warm-up matches, beating both Wales and Bulgaria 3-0, with their array of world-class attackers all showing their teeth.

Kylian Mbappe, still only 22, was on target against Wales, as were Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele. Mbappe is the most exciting player in this incredible squad, with electrifying pace, and he simply destroyed Argentina in the World Cup 2018 Round of 16, before scoring in the final.

Euro 2020: Can Antoine Griezmann step up and lead France to a win against rivals Germany?

Barcelona ace Griezmann scored again in the match with Bulgaria and veteran forward Olivier Giroud bagged a brace, while Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema made a welcome return to the fold.

With N’Golo Kante running the midfield and Raphael Varane marshalling the defence it is difficult to find a weakness in this team, captained by keeper Hugo Lloris.

Can Germany’s young guns deliver?

The 2014 World Cup champions have been through a period of transition and Low is desperate to avoid a repeat of the misery of group elimination at Russia 2018. He has enough talent in his squad to overcome that first hurdle, though he may have to rely on Germany being one of the best third-placed finishers.

Young strikers Timo Werner and Kai Havertz initially struggled to make an impact after their big-money moves to Chelsea, but their season ended in triumph as Thomas Tuchel’s Blues won the Champions League, beating favourites Manchester City in the final where Havertz scored the only goal of the game.

They could both feature on Tuesday, as could FC Bayern striker Serge Gnabry, who has become a serial trophy winner with Die Bayern after struggling as a youngster in the Premier League with Arsenal. Like Mbappe he has explosive pace, and can play as centre forward or out wide if Low wants to accommodate Werner or the veteran Thomas Muller as main striker.

But while this team has undoubted firepower, they fired seven past Latvia in a warm-up last week, they can be a little brittle at the back. A World Cup qualifying defeat to North Macedonia was bad enough, but the Germans have also conceded three goals to both Switzerland and Turkey in recent months, as well as taking a six-goal thumping from Spain.

They need to lose this fragility, or France could tear the German team apart.

History

These two teams are Euro aristocracy winning the tournament five times between them, France twice and Germany three times.

In terms of head to heads, France have won five of the last ten meetings, with three draws and two victories for Germany.

The last meeting was a 2-1 win for France in the inaugural Nations League in 2018 as Griezmann netted a double.Antoine Griezmann celebrates with teammates after scoring France’s second goal against Wales during a friendly clash at the Allianz Riviera stadium

Betting Tip

??
France vs Germany France Draw No Bet @ 1.90
June 16, 03:00 (GMT+8)

With some big Euro 2020 results already in both Germany and France need to open their account on Tuesday and the odds tell us this clash is wide open, with Germany at 2.71 and France marginal favourites, at odds of 2.69, with the draw at 2.95.

But I believe Les Bleus confidence, consistency and quality could be too much for the Germans.
