Premier League: Liverpool Keep Rolling With Mane and Salah

Liverpool 2-0 Sheffield United

The red juggernauts in the Premier League just keep on winning. This time, they defeated Sheffield United by posting a clean sheet in front of their faithful fans in Anfield.

Records and milestones keep on being surpassed by Liverpool as they try to not only win their first championship in the Premier League era, but they also have a real shot of achieving a historic feat based on our Premier League 2020 odds.

Liverpool are currently on track to surpass the Invincibles since they are yet to be beaten this term. And if they will keep this up — barring any major injuries — I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ll do just that.

Sheffield United did not have the start that they were looking for as Mo Salah scored the first goal in less than five minutes. But they kept on fighting particularly on the defencive end where they thwarted majority of Liverpool’s chances. Otherwise, it would’ve been a goal-fest for the Reds.

However, Liverpool’s overall quality out front proved to be too much for the Blades, and it was capped off by a second-half goal by Sadio Mane as the crowd in Anfield was in pandemonium.

This game may not have featured a lot of Premier League 2020 highlights than expected by Liverpool’s standards. Nonetheless, it was another quality win for the league leaders.

SBOBET offers you a recap of this great match.

Highlights of the game

Eager to stamp their class early, Liverpool got off to a great start by hitting the woodwork right away. And by having two of the top scorers in the Premier League, they simply had their way all evening.

Liverpool’s greatest signing in Virgil Van Dijk ignited an early attack for the Reds as he found Andy Robertson which led to a left volley for a Mo Salah score. Robertson showed his brilliant touch to stay onside, and Salah showed poise when he let out a cool, low finish right past the hands of Sheffield’s Dean Henderson.

David McGoldrick would attempt the Blades’ only real chance of the evening in the seventh minute, as he launched a long distance strike just outside the box. Alisson Becker, meanwhile, showed his fast reflexes by knocking the ball away.

Mo Salah would try his luck a few more times in the first half. Roberto Firmino found him open at the middle of the penalty area in the 13th minute. However, he rushed his shot a bit and his touch was saved by Dean Henderson. The Blades’ goal keeper did a brilliant save once more when Salah had an opening in the 30th minute.

Since then, Sheffield’s backline was put to work for the most part because of Liverpool’s dominance in the possession.

Fast forward to the 60th minute, the Blades almost suffered a humiliating scene when Mo Salah’s volley just hit the side of the goal post and the ball almost went inside the net. Dean Henderson caught the fortuitous bounce or else it would’ve been the Egyptian’s second goal of the night.

Sadio Mane capped off Liverpool’s brilliance by playing give-and-go with Mo Salah in the 64th minute. The Senegal international came determined and fed Salah with a pass in the middle right before he got it back for a goal after his second attempt.

Some pundits thought that the Reds were not quite as sharp as they have been recently since their execution on some plays weren’t as crisp. But even if that’s the case, everything still worked in their favour as they continue to roll.

It remains to be seen on who will hand Liverpool’s first loss of the season.

Key statistics

The Blades have only shot three times compared to 19 for the Reds. Liverpool dominated the possession at 75-per cent while having a whopping pass accuracy of 90-per cent.

Liverpool have compiled 58 points already in their 20 Premier League games this campaign, and the only team that has done that were Manchester City back in 2018.

At the same time, the Reds have scored in their 29th consecutive game in the league. Only two teams have ever recorded a longer scoring streak, and that was Arsenal back in 2001 and 2002 and Manchester United back in 2007 and 2008.

Sheffield United have already lost to Liverpool twice this season.

What’s next?

Liverpool will fly over to Tottenham to face the Spurs on January 12th. Then they will face Manchester United, Wolverhampton, and West Ham to round out their January schedule.

Sheffield United, on the other hand, will host West Ham on January 11th before visiting Arsenal the week after at the Emirates Stadium.
