Plenty of Juventus fans are happy with their standing in the league as of the moment. They are six points clear of closest rivals Inter Milan, and their incredible league form has been nothing short of appalling. While they curiously ceded points to Genoa last October, their dominance against the rest of Italy’s finest footballing organisations cannot be denied.
With this in mind, the club and their army of passionate fans can focus on the one thing that truly matters for them: the Champions League. With proven winner Cristiano Ronaldo donning their shirt this year, many were confident that this season’s Champions League trophy had their name scribbled on it.
However, Manchester United had other plans and knocked on their chances of instant qualification to the knockout stages. Juventus were dominating for much of the game, with Ronaldo scoring the opener. However, a top-quality goal from Juan Mata and an unfortunate own goal by Leonardo Bonucci put them closer to the Red Devils in the group.
Not only were they robbed of the goal, but Jose Mourinho also added to the fire by taunting the stunned Juventus crowd after the match. Many were understandably livid after such a boisterous display. And while he didn’t immediately address the United boss’ actions, he didn’t hold back on spitting venom his counterpart’s way. He said the free-kicks they got as the only way to score as they presented no other threat.
Given how prolific the side has scored in domestic and European competitions, there is no question that they will be coming to this match with an intention to indirectly avenge their Champions League loss. With players Cristiano Ronaldo, Mario Mandzukic and Paulo Dybala ready to score at any moment, there isn’t a shortage of talent in Juventus’ final third.
It will be quite unfortunate for Milan if they face an angry Juventus team.
Fiery Rossoneri: Down, But Not Out
AC Milan had a shaky start to the season, winning only one of their first five matches. However, they were able to bounce back and climb all the way up to fourth. While ten points separate Milan from their visitors, a stellar result here would quickly turn the tables around.
However, I’m not sure if they can handle the pressure of beating Juventus with several important players battling injuries. Lucas Biglia, easily one of their best defenders in the team, will be out for four months due to his calf injury.
However, the Argentine defender isn’t the only man with a knock in the club. Gonzalo Higuain, Juventus’ disowned son, has been mending his back bruises. Their tough Europa League draw also caused injury to key players such as Mateo Musacchio and Hakan Calhanoglu.
Any manager would have lost his marbles if he was in the same situation as Gattuso. The Rossoneri‘s former midfielder made an admirable stand and declared that he will not take their upcoming game against the league leaders in a poor mental state.
“Juventus are one of the best sides in Europe, let alone Italy, but we won’t sit there crying into our hankies,” he told the press after the match against Betis. “We’ll face them and play our football.”
Even Milan keeper Pepe Reina declared that his team doesn’t fear Juve: “With all humility and respect, we’re aware they are strong, but we face them with no fear, there is so much trust.”
“We play with a full San Siro and we have to do our best to get three points.”
History
Milan have had an interesting couple of months. They have lost consecutive matches to Inter and Betis in September, but they enjoyed a long eight-game unbeaten run prior to that. Moreover, they are on a four-game undefeated run. Meanwhile, their shock loss to Manchester United is the first time Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus lost this season in any of the competitions they have been in.
